Porter made his return to the NBA in 2024-25 after several off-court issues led him overseas for a fresh start. He began the season with the Clippers, where he would make 45 appearances, but he shot 24.5 percent from beyond the arc and struggled to break through with 19.8 minutes per game. A mid-season trade to the Bucks certainly rejuvenated him, however. In Milwaukee, Porter found his stride with averages of 11.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 three-pointers in just 19.9 minutes. His outlook for 2025-26 is even brighter. Damian Lillard was waived following his Achilles injury, and the Bucks reloaded by adding Myles Turner in free agency. The rest of the roster looks familiar, although Porter is now positioned to fill in as the starting point guard with Cole Anthony and Ryan Rollins backing him up. Porter was given a two-year, $11 million contract in free agency, and the Bucks will need him to soak up a ton of usage in the backcourt. Porter holds career averages of 13.9 points, 4.6 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.7 three-pointers in 27.3 minutes per game, and now he's about to step into the best situation of his career by a mile. Bryan Kevin Porter Jr. was born in 2000 in Seattle, Washington to Bryan Sr. and Ayanna Porter. He followed in his father's footsteps by attending Rainier Beach High School in Seattle. As a senior, Porter posted 27 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists per game as the team reached the state championship. As a result of his outstanding effort, he was awarded the honor of Washington Mr. Basketball for 2018. Porter's lone season at USC was a campaign defined by fits and starts. The 6-foot-6 guard mainly came off the bench, but he provided scoring when he was available. The Seattle native opened the season with five straight double-digit scoring games. Porter suffered a quadriceps contusion on Nov. 20 and ended up missing nine games. He returned on Jan. 10, but he only scored five points. He was suspended three days later for "personal conduct issues." Porter would get his act together and return to the team on Jan. 24. He closed the season by scoring in double digits in five of his last eight games. The wing had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Oregon State. He scored a season-high 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field in the Pac-12 Tournament loss to Washington. After the season, he declared for the 2019 NBA Draft and left with three seasons of eligibility. Porter was selected 30th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks, but was later traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers via the Detroit Pistons.

It's hard to determine just how important Porter might be for the Clippers, who took a flyer by signing him to a two-year deal in the offseason. The 24-year-old guard, who will turn 25 in the latter stages of the regular season, didn't play in the NBA this past season after being arrested on an assault charge relating to a domestic incident that occurred in September. The Rockets traded him a month later to the Thunder, who immediately waived him. Porter played in Greece during the spring, but it's unclear how he'll adjust to the pace of the NBA after spending almost 18 months away from the league. There might be some untapped potential there, as he averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 34.3 minutes per game over 59 regular-season appearances with the Rockets during the 2022-23 campaign. However, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Porter to handle that kind of role in Los Angeles, with his minutes probably hovering around the 15-20 mark while coming off the bench in a backcourt featuring James Harden, Terance Mann, Norman Powell and Kris Dunn. Porter should see minutes steadily off the bench, but he shouldn't have a role significant enough to make him valuable in fantasy regardless of the format. The only path Porter has toward fantasy relevancy is to earn one of the two backup roles in the backcourt, and even in that scenario, his upside would be severely limited.
Porter was a pleasant surprise last season, averaging a career-high 19.2 points per game, ending as the 84th-ranked player in nine-category leagues. It wasn't only on the offensive end where he excelled, also producing a career-high 1.4 steals. Both of these numbers would typically indicate that he is a player on the rise heading into his fifth season. However, following assault charges, Houston traded Porter to Oklahoma City, where he was waived, in October. It's not clear if any team will sign him.
Porter advertised some intriguing upside during his 26-game 2020-21 sophomore season with the Rockets, where he notably produced a 50-point, 11-assist game against the Bucks. Last year, Porter didn't quite reach the heights that optimists were hoping for, but he still cracked the top 100 in per-game fantasy production (rank 96). Sharing the backcourt with No. 2 overall pick Jalen Green, Porter struggled early on. For the first three months of the season (21 appearances), he averaged 13.0 points on abysmal 36/32/63 shooting splits. However, the sophomore guard picked things up after the new year. In his final 40 appearances, he averaged 16.9 points on 44/40/65 shooting, 6.3 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 31.6 minutes. The 22-year-old should continue developing this season, but he'll need to keep sharing the ball with Green as well as No. 3 overall pick Jabari Smith and new starting center Alperen Sengun - an excellent passer for the position. Porter's usage may not increase, so interested fantasy managers will have to bank on improved efficiency when projecting his 2022-23 campaign. As it stands, he's a mid-to-late-round flier.
Porter was shipped to Houston last January for a second-round pick. The Rockets had Porter play 15 G League games, where he dominated, before joining the parent club. Porter appeared in 26 games (23 starts) with the Rockets, averaging 16.6 points, 6.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds. His shooting splits (43/31/73) left something to be desired, but he hasn't even reached 82 NBA games played yet. Most notably, Porter produced a 50-point, 11-assist game against the Bucks in late April. Based on that alone, there's plenty of reason to believe in Porter's upside. The 21-year-old is one of the focal points of Houston's rebuild along with rookies Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, plus Christian Wood. With the news that John Wall won't play for the Rockets this season, Porter is firmly established as the team's starting point guard. Notably, he averaged 19.9 points and 8.0 assists per 36 minutes last season with Wall and James Harden off the court. On one hand, expecting that out of Porter seems extremely optimistic. On the other hand, another year of development and organizational commitment means Porter is certainly in position for a breakout season.
In his first NBA season, Porter appeared in 50 games for Cleveland to little fanfare. The first-rounder out of USC averaged 10.0 points, 3.2 boards, 2.2 assists and 1.1 threes across 23.2 minutes per contest, while shooting respectably from the field (44.2 percent) and three (33.5 percent). He struggled with free-throw attempts, shooting just 72.3 percent from the charity stripe. He wasn't given too much run in 2019-20, but when he excelled when given an increased workload. In 18 games where he saw at least 25 minutes of action, Porter's production increased to 15.1 points, 3.8 boards, 3.4 assists, 1.9 triples and 1.1 steals. His shooting was improved in these contests as well. Cleveland projects to be one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference yet again in 2020-21, and the team would do well to see what Porter can do given an expanded role for the entire season. He'll compete with Cedi Osman and rookie Isaac Okoro for minutes at small forward, but we've maybe seen the best of Osman already, which is only marginally better than first-year Porter. If he can win a starting job this season, Porter has the potential to be a meaningful player for fantasy managers. Until that happens, he should only be drafted in deep leagues.
In terms of pure talent, Porter ranks among the top guards in the 2019 Draft, but he had an up-and-down freshman season at USC that was marred by off-court issues and a suspension. However, Porter will likely be given a fair chance to develop for the rebuilding Cavs. During 13 college appearances in which Porter saw at least 24 minutes, he averaged 11.8 points on 9.2 shots, 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals. A hip injury prevented him from participating in summer league, but he's expected to be ready for training camp. At 6-foot-6, 218 pounds, Porter should be able to secure minutes at shooting guard and small forward, though he'll have to beat out the likes of Brandon Knight, Jordan Clarkson and Dylan Windler for consistent run off the bench. While Porter probably won't return standard fantasy league value, there's room for him to be drafted with the final selection of a deep league, with a dynasty league pickup being the best option.
