Sochan is coming off what can only be described as a roller coaster of a season, ending as the 178th-ranked player in standard fantasy formats. He opened the campaign as the starting point guard, an experiment that seemed doomed to fail from the jump. Unsurprisingly, he soon shifted to his more natural position at wing/forward, allowing him to put up intriguing production across multiple categories. He closed with averages of 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 0.9 three-pointers and 1.3 combined steals and blocks. In what has been a busy offseason for the Spurs, newly acquired Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes are likely going to be inserted into the starting lineup. This alone muddies the water when it comes to Sochan's role, making him a tough player to draft outside of slightly deeper formats. It is likely he will still play a meaningful role given San Antonio is still figuring out its long-term roster. Sochan is someone to monitor closely on the off chance he starts at power forward or plays significant minutes in a leading role off the bench. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Sochan was born May 20, 2003 in Guymon, Oklahoma. His mother, Aneta, was a Polish basketball player who met Sochan's father, Ryan Williams, in Oklahoma while she was there to study. Sochan spent most of his childhood in Milton Keynes, England, where he began playing basketball. He began his high school career in La Lumiere School in Indiana but left America due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sochan has represented both the junior and standard Polish national basketball teams. On the junior under-16 team, he won the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B and was named Tournament MVP. During the EuroBasket 2022 qualification, he became the youngest player to ever take the floor for Poland, playing 29 minutes and posting 18 points and a block that sealed the victory for the country. During the 2020-21 season, the wing played professionally for Orange Academy Ratiopharm in the German Pro B League, where he averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 steals in 25.4 minutes. Sochan played collegiately at Baylor in 2021-22, where he averaged 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 25.0 minutes. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team and earned the Big 12 Sixth Man Award. In the 2022 NBA Draft, he was selected ninth overall by the San Antonio Spurs.

November 5, 2024
The Spurs announced Tuesday that Sochan suffered a fracture in the proximal phalanx of his left thumb during Monday's game against the Clippers. Sochan is scheduled to undergo surgery this week, and the team will provide updates as appropriate, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS While the Spurs have yet to give an official return timetable for Sochan, fantasy managers can expect him to be sidelined for a significant period. The 21-year-old forward was in the midst of a breakout campaign, averaging 15.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals on 51.2 percent shooting from the field in 29.3 minutes across seven appearances before suffering his injury. Until Sochan is able to return, Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie are all candidates to receive increased playing time.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
The Spurs are among the toughest teams to gauge in the NBA. Sochan was the No. 9 pick in the 2022 draft and flashed moments of brilliance in his rookie season. After a lackluster start, Sochan averaged 13.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks across his final 32 games. His last eight games were even more intriguing -- 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.9 steals per game. However, you have to consider that the eight-game stretch included numerous injured/absent players during the Spurs' quest to tank for the No. 1 pick, which they achieved and selected Victor Wembanyama. Sochan himself also appeared in just 56 games, missing much of the end of the season due to a knee injury -- the seriousness of which may have been exaggerated for tanking purposes. Sochan should take steps forward as a sophomore, and he's a fit alongside Wembanyama, but if San Antonio is healthier and tries to win games throughout the whole year, the sophomore's usage may not be as high as optimists hope. Ultimately, he projects as a role player within the Spurs' offense. Sochan is a fine flier at the end of standard league drafts, but he's better suited for deeper formats.
An athletic two-way wing out of Baylor, Sochan was selected with the No. 9 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Spurs. However, he sat out Summer League due to a hamstring injury and contracting COVID-19. As a freshman last season, he won Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year behind averages of 9.2 points on 47/30/59 shooting, 6.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.0 combined steals-plus-blocks in 25.0 minutes. Clearly, Sochan's shooting is a concern. He has a distinct lack of a reliable jumper for a forward, struggling from both the charity stripe and three-point line - a slow release doesn't help. But, he projects as an NBA-ready defender and has displayed upside as a playmaker and finisher around the basket. As a rookie, he'll fight for minutes against an underwhelming backup crew on the wing containing Josh Richardson, rookie Malaki Branham, Zach Collins and Keita Bates-Diop. There's a pathway to Sochan loggingg 25-plus minutes, but most of his fantasy value will probably be derived from his defensive stats. He's risky in standard leagues, but there's deep-league potential.

Happy with positional change
FSan Antonio Spurs
October 3, 2024
Sochan is happy that last season's point guard experiment is over, according to Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News. "Playing my normal position is going to be great," Sochan said at media day. "I'm not going to be thinking as much. It's going to come more natural."
ANALYSIS Sochan opened the 2023-24 season as the Spurs' starting point guard, and while he showed flashes of quality in that role, he's better suited to play as a forward. With Chris Paul ready to take over as the starting point guard and rookie Stephon Castle as the long-term option, Sochan will focus on a role he knows best while also tweaking his mechanics, something he's been working on during the offseason.
