2024 Fantasy Outlook
A right mid-foot sprain limited Vanderbilt to only 29 regular-season appearances (six starts) during the 2023-24 campaign. The defensive-minded forward was an integral part of the Lakers' postseason rotation the previous year when Los Angeles advanced to the Western Conference Finals before ultimately losing to Denver. The Lakers lost to the Nuggets in last season's playoffs again, but this time it was a rare first-round exit for a LeBron James-led squad. The Lakers felt Vanderbilt's absence all season, as they constantly changed and shifted lineups looking for a spark. Now healthy, Vanderbilt is set to play an integral, cohesive role for the star-studded Lakers. He may not start in the frontcourt, but Vanderbilt should see consistent minutes regardless of his role. However, for fantasy purposes, there's not much to see. He's a solid rebounder and defender, but his outside shooting is a major concern. Vanderbilt is better utilized in non-category settings, but even then, he's not going to deliver enough production to be a must-roster player in standard leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Despite playing a consistent role for both the Lakers and the Jazz last season, Vanderbilt continues to struggle on offense. He ended as the 129th-ranked player in nine-category leagues, averaging 7.9 points per game to go with 7.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals. He remains an efficient scorer, shooting 54.8 percent from the field. It is simply a lack of offensive versatility that lets him down. His overall value is built on rebounds and steals, something he is typically able to deliver with regularity. He may continue to start for the Lakers, but as we saw down the stretch last season, that does not mean he will play starters' minutes. Over the final 12 games of the season, Vanderbilt exceeded 25 minutes on only three occasions. Given what we know, he should be viewed as a specialist target at the back end of drafts, or more likely a streaming candidate for anyone needing steals and boards.
Coming off easily the best season of his career, Vanderbilt now finds himself on a Utah team that appears to have shifted trajectory. The 2021-22 season was a breakout for Vanderbilt, spending much of the season as the starting power forward for the Timberwolves. While his production slowed as the season came to an end, his per-game numbers of 6.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks in 25.4 minutes were enough to see him rank 128th in eight-category per-game fantasy production. Now in Utah, Vanderbilt should be able to see a similar workload on the rebuilding squad, if not more minutes. The frontcourt is a little jammed, but aside from Lauri Markkanen, the other options don't inspire confidence -- Kelly Olynyk, Walker Kessler, Cody Zeller and Udoka Azubuike head into camp as options at center. There's upside for Vanderbilt to make a meaningful impact as a rebounder and defender, but the preseason will help inform us on whether or not he can push 30 minutes per game.
After Vanderbilt struggled to land a rotational role in his first two seasons, he was given the most run of his career in 2020-21. He started 30 of his 64 appearances and averaged 5.4 points on 60.6 percent shooting, 5.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.7 combined steals-plus-blocks in 17.8 minutes. He's an extremely low-usage, defensive-minded player. Per 36 minutes, he averages an impressive 11.6 rebounds and 3.5 combined steals-plus-blocks. He was also the 100th-most valuable fantasy player on a per-minute basis last season, though he ranked just 222nd in per-game production due to a low minutes total. This season, he'll be battling for the starting power forward job with Jaden McDaniels and Taurean Prince. Even if Vanderbilt doesn't earn the job, he should continue to see roughly 15-20 minutes per game as a defensive specialist. He's worth considering with a final pick in deep drafts considering his per-minute output.
The 41st overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft will provide depth and may not get many minutes off the bench. He saw action in two games for Minnesota last season after coming over in a trade from Denver, while also spending time with the team's G League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves. In seven games for Iowa, Vanderbilt averaged 28.7 minutes per game and held averages of 15.9 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks.

Could be ready for season opener
FLos Angeles Lakers
September 26, 2024
Vanderbilt underwent procedures on each of his feet this offseason but could be ready for the 2024-25 regular-season opener, Jovan Buha of The Athletic speculates.
ANALYSIS
According to the Lakers' general manager, Rob Pelinka, the surgeries happened at the beginning of the offseason, giving Vanderbilt lots of time to recover. Vanderbilt had a bone spur in one foot, and the doctor recommended going ahead and cleaning up the other foot since he was already set to miss time. Vanderbilt struggled to stay on the court in 2023-24, making just 29 regular-season appearances, but he's expected to play a bigger role, either off the bench or as a starter, in 2024-25.
