2026 Fantasy Outlook
Matthews struggled in the majors again even though his underlying metrics showed star potential. Matthews has good control (2.2 BB/9 at Triple-A in 2024), strong strikeout rates (11.7 K/9 at Triple-A) and velocity (96.2 average mph fastball in the majors). He began last season at Triple-A where he excelled with a 1.72 ERA and 31.8% K% in 12 starts. It was a different story once called up to the majors in May as he had a 5.56 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. However, he improved his home runs allowed (to 1.63 HR/9 from 2.63 HR/9) and his velocity (up from 94.9 mph) while maintaining above average strikeout (10.0 K/9) and walk rates (2.7 BB/9). He may have been unlucky with a high .357 BABIP as his 3.79 FIP would seem to indicate. He did have a .364 BABIP in the majors in 2024, however. He'll compete for a rotation spot this spring. Given his underlying metrics, he's a pitcher that could put together a surprise season. Read Past Outlooks
Headed to Triple-A
The Twins optioned Matthews to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday.
Analysis
Matthews had been a candidate to make Minnesota's Opening Day rotation, but the 25-year-old will come up short. In 2025, the right-hander made 16 big-league starts, posting a 5.56 ERA and an 88:24 K:BB across 79.1 innings. Matthews' move to Triple-A likely means Mick Abel will have a spot in the Twins' rotation.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Matthews was a fast-rising prospect last season who rose from High-A to the majors based on his impeccable control and strong strikeout rates but struggled in his first trip to the majors. Matthews had a 1.84 ERA with a 10.5 K/9 and just six walks in 78 innings between High-A and Double-A. After four starts at Triple-A, he was called up in August and had a 3.00 ERA in his first three starts, before struggling in his next six outings (9.13 ERA). He had good (2.6 BB/9) but not elite control in the majors but struggled to keep the ball in the park (2.6 HR/9). He also failed to pitch more than five innings in any start, though the Twins may have been limiting his workload. Matthews could win a spot in the rotation this spring and he has promising signs given his miniscule walk rate (1.0 BB/9 career in minors), strong strikeout rates (10.2 K/9 career in minors) and velocity (94.9 average mph fastball in the majors).
