Zach Neto

25-Year-Old ShortstopSS
Los Angeles Angels
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Neto's 2025 was bookended by IL stints; his season debut was delayed until mid-April due to his recovery from right shoulder surgery, and he missed the final few weeks with a left hand strain. In between, the shortstop hit 26 homers and stole 26 bags in 128 games as one of the few bright spots for the last-place Angels. His 26.9 K% and 6.0 BB% last season show that his plate skills still need refinement, but Neto has proven that he can make up for it with a lot of loud contact. In fact, Neto ranked in the top 10 percent of the league last season by Statcast's xwOBA on Contact, and in the top 15 percent of the league in terms of barrel rate and xSLG. Entering his age-25 season, Neto could stand to improve his efficiency on the basepaths, as he's been caught stealing 20 times in 81 career attempts. He's not a true burner by sprint speed, and new manager Kurt Suzuki could tweak the lineup to prioritize OBP in the leadoff spot, potentially limiting Neto's chances to run. That being said, the Angels aren't going to pump the brakes completely on one of their most exciting young talents, a certainty which keeps 30-30 on the table. Read Past Outlooks

Neto was removed from Friday's Cactus League game against the White Sox after being hit by a pitch, but he is OK, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
The 25-year-old shortstop was plunked to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but it never seemed to be a serious issue as he remained in to run the bases and recorded a steal. Neto was then replaced by a pinch hitter in a precautionary move, which makes sense given that he recently returned from a wrist sprain that sidelined him for a couple days.

Stat Review
How does Zach Neto compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.
  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG

  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Expected BA
    Expected Batting Average.
  • Expected SLG
    Expected Slugging Percentage.
  • Sprint Speed
The speed of a runner from home to first, in feet per second.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
The 24-year-old shortstop took a major step forward during his sophomore campaign in 2024 and finished with 23 homers, 30 steals and a .761 OPS in 155 games. He also provided plus-11 Defensive Runs Saved, though his range was limited with minus-five Outs Above Average. Neto was drafted during the first round of the 2022 Draft and has only 287 professional games under his belt, so he could continue to improve as he matures. He's a cornerstone piece up the middle for the Angels and got more starts in the two-hole than any other spot in the lineup last year. Early-November shoulder surgery clouds his status for Opening Day, and it could prevent him from achieving what otherwise seemed likely to be another 20-20 season.
Neto began the season with Double-A Rocket City but was soon promoted to the majors. After a slow start, he raised his OPS to .769 but was placed on the IL in mid-June with a left oblique strain. Neto returned after the All-Star break, posting a .566 OPS over the next three weeks. Neto revisited the IL, this time with back stiffness. He came back in early September but continued to struggle with a .547 OPS over the last 17 games of the season. Neto possesses below average power with enough speed to generate double-digit stolen bases; his primary asset is getting on base. In part because he hit more fly balls than he did in the minors, Neto's .272 BABIP was low. The expectation is for it to increase as Neto gets more acclimated to major league pitching. Even so, Neto has limited mixed league appeal, though he could be more useful if his on-base skills warrant one of the top-two spots in the Angels lineup.
As is typically their custom, the Angels selected a college player they thought could move quickly to the big leagues, landing Neto with the 13th overall pick in 2022. He didn't face the best competition at Campbell in the Big South Conference, but Neto had a 1.026 OPS with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2021 and hit .407/.514/.769 his junior year. His advanced hit tool transferred quickly against Double-A pitching, as he slashed .320/.382/.492 with four home runs, four steals and a 21.3 K% in 136 plate appearances. While Neto was age-appropriate for Double-A, it's still impressive when a hitter has success at that level the year they were drafted. There's a lot going on with Neto's setup at the plate, including a big leg kick, but it works for him. He is probably always going to be hit-over-power, projecting as a No. 1 or No. 2 hitter if he maxes out, and he could chip in 8-to-12 steals. The organizational depth chart basically ensures Neto will be the Angels' shortstop of the future, and he could be up this summer, although it would be surprising if he were better than league average if the Angels push him to the majors in his first full season as a pro.
