2026 Fantasy Outlook
Wells avoided his second career Tommy John surgery in 2024 but required a UCL revision and internal brace augmentation procedure in June of that year. After missing most of 2025, the 6-foot-8 right-hander returned to the Orioles for four starts in September, pitching to a sparkling 2.91 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB across 21.2 major-league innings. It was enough for president of baseball operations Mike Elias to publicly declare his intention for Wells to be part of the big-league rotation entering 2026. While he's always been stingy with his control, Wells is lacking in terms of velocity and swing-and-miss dominance. His biggest problem historically has been the home-run ball, with Wells averaging 1.62 HR/9 across parts of five big-league seasons. The tough division hurts his streaming appeal. Read Past Outlooks
Optioned to Norfolk
The Orioles optioned Wells to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday.
Analysis
Wells owns a 3.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 18.1 innings this season, but the O's will send him to the minors as they make room on the active roster for Dietrich Enns' (foot) return from the injured list and Nick Raquet's promotion from Triple-A. Wells will likely be welcomed back to Baltimore's bullpen when the team needs a fresh arm.

2022
Wells had a career year in 2023, but he made three starts in 2024 before getting shut down and eventually needing UCL revision and internal brace augmentation surgery in mid-June. General manager Mike Elias said in November that the team is hoping to get Wells back around midseason to work in some capacity, and his role will likely be determined by how quickly he recovers and if the team needs him in the rotation. It's possible that those in dynasty leagues and draft-and-hold leagues will be able to get double-digit starts from Wells later this summer, and he's shown at least streamer upside and when he's going well, he can be utilized in mixed leagues. Wells has a good changeup, a plus slider and plus control, which helps make up for his low-90s fastball. He also has elite movement (19 inches of induced vertical break) on his four-seamer, which allows the pitch to play above its velocity. In roto leagues, Wells' career 1.12 WHIP in 46 big-league starts is perhaps the best argument for monitoring his recovery.

In line for rotation spot in 2024
Wells is expected to return to a rotation role for the Orioles in 2024, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
Analysis
Wells was demoted to the minors and eventually the bullpen following a rough patch in the middle of the season. He thrived down the stretch in a relief role, throwing a combined 8.1 scoreless innings while yielding just one hit and one walk with nine strikeouts. The 29-year-old was the Orioles' best starter in the first half, though, collecting a 3.18 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 103:24 K:BB over 104.2 frames. Now that Wells' workload is built up a little more, the O's will hope fatigue isn't as much of a factor in 2024.
