Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Austin signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Cubs this offseason, returning to MLB after six seasons in NPB in Japan. The righty-hitting first baseman/designated hitter figures to occupy the short side of a platoon with Moises Ballesteros at designated hitter while also sparing Michael Busch at first base occasionally. Now 34, Austin's best season in NPB was 2024, when he logged a 197 wRC+. His .269/.350/.484 line with 11 home runs and an 18.3 percent strikeout rate in 65 games in 2025 was solid but not spectacular. Even before heading overseas, Austin had a career .467 slugging percentage in the majors against southpaws. Read Past Outlooks
Placed on 60-day IL
The Cubs placed Austin (knee) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Analysis
Austin underwent a patellar tendon debridement procedure on his right knee in February. He remains without a return timeline, but his move to the 60-day IL ensures he'll remain out until at least late May. His spot on the 40-man roster will be handed to Dylan Carlson, whose contract was selected in a corresponding move.

Austin broke camp with the Twins but appeared in just two games with Minnesota before being designated for assignment. He was subsequently scooped up by the Giants; Austin saw time at first base and both corner outfield spots with San Francisco, hitting .189 with a .679 OPS and 38.8 K% in 70 games before being sent to waivers again. Austin latched on with Milwaukee for the final month of the season and posted an .820 OPS and 6:7 BB:K in 17 games thanks to an altered approach at the plate. The 28-year-old once again displayed above-average power when given opportunities (.221 ISO), though that came with the aforementioned contact issues and significant platoon splits (.540 OPS vs. righties, .813 OPS vs. lefties). Should he carve out a big-league role for himself in 2020, it will likely be on the short side of a platoon.
