Ty Madden

24-Year-Old PitcherRP
Detroit Tigers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Madden was among a handful of Detroit players who made their MLB debuts in 2024, and the righty more or less held his own. He posted a 4.30 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 23 innings of work across six appearances (one start), often pitching in a bulk relief capacity. Madden only struck out 17 batters in those 23 innings, but he fanned 102 across 79 innings for Triple-A Toledo and has a plus fastball and a plus slider, so there could be room for growth in this area at the MLB level. The big question for the 24-year-old heading into 2025 will be his role. Tarik Skubal is the only truly established starter on the roster, but the Tigers have a number of younger options with upside behind him. As a result, Madden may again work out of the bullpen. Even if he's a bulk reliever, such an arrangement would limit the youngster's ceiling. Read Past Outlooks

Ineffective in relief Saturday
PDetroit Tigers
September 29, 2024
Madden allowed three runs on four hits and a walk across three innings of relief during Saturday's 4-0 loss to the White Sox. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Opener Beau Brieske was tagged with the loss for allowing just a single run, but Madden didn't help matters during his uneven relief appearance. The 24-year-old righty had a sharp 2.55 ERA over his first four outings following his first MLB promotion in late August, but he now has a 10.12 ERA over his last two games. The Tigers are headed to the postseason and have some decisions to make with their pitching staff, so it remains to be seen if Madden makes the playoff roster and gets to pitch again during his rookie campaign.

Stat Review
How does Ty Madden compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The Tigers all of a sudden have a decent amount of starting pitching depth, so while Madden could be ready sometime this summer, there's no guarantee a spot will be open. A 6-foot-3 righty with a plus fastball and a plus slider, Madden has thrown over 115 innings in back-to-back seasons. He still hasn't reached Triple-A, but he has made 33 appearances at Double-A, dating back to 2022. Madden's 10.2 percent walk rate was the closest thing to a blemish on his 2023 season, and while scouts project him for average control, it's not a given that he'll be a starter long term. His changeup, cutter and curveball are middling or worse offerings, and he could potentially touch triple digits with his fastball if he were working out of the bullpen. Madden won't need to be added to the 40-man roster as Rule 5 draft protection until after the 2024 season, so he needs to force the issue to debut this year.
Madden slid a bit in the 2021 Draft to the back-end of the first round and the Tigers are happy he did after how well he pitched in his first pro season in 2022. The right-hander collected a 3.01 ERA and 133:38 K:BB over 122.2 innings between High- and Double-A, performing better at the latter level. Madden is probably more of a No. 4 or No. 5 starter, but he looks like he has a decent floor and it probably won't be long before he's major-league ready.
