2026 Fantasy Outlook
Schwellenbach made modest improvements to his ERA (3.09), WHIP (0.97) and walk rate (4.1 percent) in 2025, but he was limited to just 17 starts due to a season-ending elbow fracture he sustained in late June. The right-hander was back to throwing before the end of the season and should be healthy to open 2026, but the injury derailed a campaign with high expectations coming off a breakout rookie season in 2024. The encouraging news going forward is that Schwellenbach dealt with a fracture rather than a ligament issue, especially considering that the right-hander already underwent Tommy John surgery a few years ago. He has yet to establish himself with a full season in a big-league rotation, but Schwellenbach has about as much upside as any pitcher with a 3.23 ERA through 38 career starts. If he can stay healthy in 2026, he should be a top-end starter in Atlanta's rotation. Read Past Outlooks
Will not return in first half
Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said Tuesday that Schwellenbach (elbow) has yet to begin a throwing program and will not make his season debut until after the All-Star break, Grant McAuley of the Marietta Daily Journal reports.
Analysis
Schwellenbach underwent surgery in February to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. The right-hander is making good progress, per Weiss, but there's no word yet on when he will be cleared for throwing. Schwellenbach was also sidelined for the final three months of the 2025 campaign with a small fracture in his elbow, so the club is proceeding extra cautiously with the hurler's rehab.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Schwellenbach was one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season, as he posted a 3.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 127:23 K:BB across 123.2 innings spanning 21 starts for Atlanta after getting the call in late May. He was especially stingy down the stretch, going 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and six strikeouts for every one walk in his final 73 innings. While he had some prospect pedigree as a second-round pick in 2021, this level of success was impossible to foresee for a player that had not pitched above the High-A level coming into the season. After missing all of 2022 following Tommy John surgery, Schwellenbach made his professional debut in 2023, pitching a total of 65 innings that year. In another day and age, the jump from 65 innings to 168.2 total frames last season would scare some drafters off, but conventional wisdom regarding pitching injuries has been challenged in recent years. Most will be eager to draft an arm of this caliber, so long as the pitcher is ostensibly healthy in the moment. A jump in strikeouts is possible with his six-pitch mix and 96th percentile chase rate.
