2026 Fantasy Outlook
Gray reached the 200-strikeout plateau in 2025 for the second straight season and third time in his career. His 21.6 percent K-BB rate was the second-best mark in the National League, trailing only Paul Skenes. Unfortunately, Gray underperformed relative to his ERA indicators for the second year in a row, finishing with a 4.28 ERA that was nearly a full run worse than his 3.29 SIERA. A .329 BABIP can be partly to blame, as it's the first time since 2018 that Gray's BABIP wasn't under .300. The 36-year-old's four-seamer velocity dipped to a career-low 91.7 mph, and the pitch was responsible for a bloated .439 xwOBA. The good news is Gray has such a varied arsenal that he doesn't need a standout heater, and his sweeper remains an elite pitch. Gray was traded to the Red Sox over the offseason, which is a ballpark downgrade for the veteran hurler but an upgrade for his wins potential. Read Past Outlooks
Dominant after All-Star snub
Gray (10-1) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over six innings.
Analysis
Gray gave up a solo homer to Josh Lowe in the second inning but otherwise kept the Angels off the scoreboard. The veteran righty needed just 70 pitches (48 strikes) to complete six frames and record his seventh straight quality start. Gray has been filthy during that stretch, posting a 1.97 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 48:12 K:BB across 45.2 innings. He was somewhat shockingly omitted from the announcement of All-Star teams Saturday, but that shouldn't lessen the impact of his performance so far on what has been a disappointing first half for Boston. Among qualified AL hurlers, Gray ranks second in ERA (2.61), 10th in WHIP (1.10) and first in wins (10).

Gray reached the 200-strikeout plateau in 2024 in his first year with the Cardinals, marking the second time in his career he's gotten to that level. At 30.3 percent, he was one of just three qualifiers to fan 30 percent of the batters he faced, joining Chris Sale and Tarik Skubal. Gray's sweeper was once again his go-to pitch for swings and misses with a 44.4 percent whiff rate, although he topped a 20 percent whiff rate with four other pitches, as well. Problems with the home run ball away from cavernous Busch Stadium helped lead to a pedestrian 3.84 ERA, but ERA indicators suggest Gray should have been at least a half-run or so better than that. Gray hasn't reached 200 innings since he did it back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015 with the Athletics, but with an average of 28.2 starts and 156.1 innings over the last five non-COVID seasons, he compares favorably to most of his contemporaries.

Interest from Atlanta
Atlanta is one of the teams to express trade interest in Gray, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report.
Analysis
Gray holds a full no-trade clause, but he could be willing to approve a deal to Atlanta since it's close to his home in Nashville and he would be going to a division leader. However, the Red Sox are not yet committed to selling after a nice stretch that's left them only three games out of a wild-card spot. The 36-year-old has been fantastic this season, going 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 82:23 K:BB across 89.2 frames covering 16 starts.
