Shay Whitcomb

27-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
Houston Astros AAA
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Whitcomb is now 27 years old and has hit .263/.344/.493 with 73 homers and 54 steals in Triple-A over the course of the past three seasons, but that production has not opened doors on the Houston roster. Whitcomb has been up each of the past two seasons with the club at one point or another, and has a single homer and no steals to show for it. Furthering the ill-fit in this organization, Whitcomb's defensive issues limit him to second base or third base in a pinch, and those spots are covered this year by Altuve and Paredes. Whitcomb has remaining options and will likely consider running for Mayor of Sugarland this season as he heads back there for a fourth season unless he is included in some sort of offseason trade to address the club's questionable pitching staff. Until that moment happens, Whitcomb's fantasy value is rather suppressed by two parts team context and one part his own flaws. Read Past Outlooks

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Whitcomb put up impressive numbers while repeating Triple-A as an older player, but what he did as a 24-year-old at Triple-A in 2023 is probably more instructive for how he'll do against big-league pitching. He slashed .224/.281/.434 with 23 home runs, 12 steals and a 31.1 percent strikeout rate in 87 games at Triple-A in 2023 and followed that up with a .293/.378/.530 slash line, 25 home runs, 26 steals and a 19.8 percent strikeout rate in 108 games at Triple-A in 2024. Whitcomb has above-average power and average speed on the bases, so there's fantasy potential here if his improvements in 2025 were legitimate and not just the product of an older player repeating a level. He turned 26 in September, and hit .220 with zero home runs and zero steals in 46 MLB plate appearances to close the year. If Whitcomb struggles again in the majors, he'll likely be written off due to his age. He can play all over the infield and outfield, but isn't a great defender anywhere, and his likely long-term role is that of a offensive-minded utility player who provides useful counting stats on the rare occasions where he's playing more than a few days per week.
