The Cardinals optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
Analysis
Fernandez has pitched well in his opportunities with the big club, posting a 1.59 ERA and 9:2 K:BB over 5.2 innings. However, the Cardinals needed to free a roster spot for Hunter Dobbins, who is starting Thursday in Pittsburgh, and Fernandez is the casualty.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Fernandez, a Rule 5 pick of the Cardinals in December 2023, won a spot on St. Louis' Opening Day roster last season. The rookie right-hander flashed nasty stuff out of the bullpen, mixing an effective slider (48 percent pitch usage) with a mid-90's four-seamer (40 percent) and the occasional cutter. The 26-year-old gained his manager's trust as the season progressed, eventually earning looks in higher-leverage spots. Fernandez recorded two saves (2nd on the team) and 12 holds (3rd) across his 62 appearances, but his 11.2 percent walk rate likely capped his high-leverage opportunities. He did finish 2024 on a high note with an 18:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings in September. If Fernandez improves his control, he'll likely fall into a setup role for St. Louis in 2025.
