2026 Fantasy Outlook
After re-establishing himself as a starter during his first year with Atlanta in 2024, Lopez made just one start last season before shoulder surgery ended his season. The right-hander is being stretched back out as a starter this winter, but it's possible he's shifted to a bullpen role. Lopez's 1.99 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 148:42 K:BB across 135.2 innings during 2024 is an alluring target, but that's the only time he's topped 70 frames in a season since 2019, and a 3.44 xFIP indicates he was likely due for some regression. He's likely to have a limited workload even if he stays healthy, so Lopez has a limited fantasy ceiling despite the potential upside. Read Past Outlooks
Six strong innings in season debut
Lopez took a no-decision Saturday against the Royals, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out three.
Analysis
Lopez might not have been overly dominant in his season debut, but he kept the Royals quiet until Salvador Perez opened the scoring with a seventh-inning solo shot. It was particularly encouraging to see the right-hander get his fastball velocity as high as 97 mph, considering he's coming off arthroscopic shoulder surgery from a year ago. Lopez tossed 77 pitches Saturday, and he'll be trying to further build himself up during his next scheduled outing in Arizona.

Lopez served as a dominant setup man for a couple of years. When Atlanta signed him last offseason, the assumption was he'd be used in that capacity. However, they made other moves to fortify their bullpen, but there were rotation openings, so Lopez was stretched out in the spring, breaking camp as a starter. Lopez responded with a sparkling 1.99 ERA in 26 appearances (25 starts), though the corresponding 3.44 xFIP and 3.58 SIERA lent some pause. Even so, an ERA in that range exceeds expectations. A bloated 87.0 percent left-on-base rate deflated Lopez's ERA, as did a low 7.5 percent home run per fly-ball mark. He missed time over the second half with right forearm inflammation and right shoulder tightness, but neither is a long-term concern, and the time off was beneficial after he averaged 63 innings over the prior three seasons. If someone wants to pay for his sub-2.00, let them. Pay for a guy you'll deploy for almost all his starts, and you'll be fine.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No innings limit
Atlanta will likely continue providing Lopez extra rest between starts whenever possible, but the right-hander doesn't have an innings limit for this season, reports Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Analysis
After spending most of the previous three seasons as a reliever, Lopez has been one of the best pitchers in MLB this season with a 1.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 76:23 K:BB across 74.1 innings, which is already his highest workload since 2019. Atlanta has made a point of finding extra rest whenever possible for the 30-year-old, as he's made just one start on four days rest, five starts on five days and seven starts on six-plus days. There's no guarantee Lopez will be able to stay fresh down the stretch, but the organization is doing all it can so he remains available and effective for the second half and postseason.
