Reid Detmers

Reid Detmers

26-Year-Old PitcherSP
Los Angeles Angels
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Detmers moved to the bullpen in 2025 and enjoyed a bounce-back campaign, posting a 3.96 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 80:25 K:BB over 61 relief appearances (63.2 innings) before a bout of left elbow inflammation ended his season. Tests showed no signs of structural damage, setting Detmers up for a normal winter. Prior to the injury, he posted a career-high 30.1 K%, coinciding with a jump in velocity while working in shorter spurts. Incredibly, he cut his home-run rate from 1.85 HR/9 to 0.85 HR/9. His 3.12 FIP was by far the best of his career. While some teams would be reluctant to mess with a good thing, the Angels are planning to move Detmers back into the starting rotation in 2026. That comes with the risk of injury, eventual fatigue and performance giveback, but he showed flashes as a starter early in his career and the Angels believe he is a different pitcher at this stage, one capable of making a difference in a starting role. Seven innings of one-hit ball
PLos Angeles Angels
June 10, 2026
Detmers allowed one run on one hit and struck out nine without walking a batter in a no-decision versus the Astros on Wednesday.
Analysis
Detmers was perfect through five innings before Shay Whitcomb led off the sixth with a solo shot. After a shaky May, Detmers has locked in this month, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 15 over 13 frames in June. He's now at a 4.00 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 97:24 K:BB through 81 innings over 14 starts this season. The southpaw will look to keep things rolling in a road start versus Arizona next week.

Stat Review
How does Reid Detmers compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

2021
It feels like Detmers has been around forever, but the left-hander is still just 25 years old entering the 2025 season. He went 3-0 with two earned runs allowed over 17.2 innings in his first three starts last season, but then went 0-6 with an 8.93 ERA over his next eight to earn a trip back to Triple-A. Home runs doomed his return in September, as he served up eight homers in 24.1 innings down the stretch to push him up to an ugly 6.70 ERA for the season. Both lefties and righties slugged over .500 against Detmers last season. He still has multiple minor-league options remaining and will have to earn his spot with the Angels in spring training. Detmers' 26.8 percent strikeout rate over the past two seasons -- 16th among pitchers that have totaled 230 combined innings in that span -- and the fact that he has a no-hitter under his belt offer a shred of hope that the 2020 first-round pick could turn a corner.
Detmers delivered a surprise performance in 2022 by pitching a perfect game and posting a 3.77 ERA for the season out of nowhere, but he unsurprisingly came back to earth last year with a 4.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 168:60 K:BB across 148.2 innings. He found an extra tick on his fastball in 2023 (94.4 mph) and upped his strikeout rate to 26.2 percent, but a 9.3 percent walk rate and 1.15 HR/9 both took a step back from the previous season. A 40.9 percent hard-hit rate was also worse, and his results appear to be well earned with a 4.45 xERA. The Angels lack any real rotation depth, especially with Shohei Ohtani departing via free agency, which should lock Detmers in for regular starts again in 2024. Detmers will turn 25 years old in July and still has some upside, but he's not a stable option for fantasy managers beyond providing innings and decent strikeout numbers. Still, you could do much worse to round out a rotation, especially in deeper leagues.
If you have Detmers as the only pitcher to throw a complete game no-hitter in 2022 as a preseason prediction, come collect your prize. Detmers entered that contest in early May with a 5.19 ERA and 3 homers allowed in 17.1 innings and proceeded to blank the Rays. Six weeks later, he found himself demoted to Triple A after consecutive rough outings, but came back just before the break and closed the season 5-3 with a 3.04 ERA with an 18% K-BB% while scattering 1.3 baserunner per nine innings. His 25% strikeout rate belies his actual stuff as he must get ahead to use his breaking balls to survive. He lacks the stuff to pitch from behind and if batters do not chase the breaking stuff, he can quickly get into trouble. The profile is fraught with risk, so proceed with caution more than with gusto.
Detmers, the No. 10 overall pick in 2020, is at the stage of his development where he has nothing left to prove in the minors but is still waiting to have prolonged success in the majors. He registered a 3.19 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 108 strikeouts in 62 innings at Double-A and Triple-A and has never pitched below Double-A in pro ball. On the flip side, he gave up 17 earned runs, five home runs and walked 11 in 20.2 innings through five MLB starts. The 6-foot-2 southpaw's famously plus curveball played as it should (.226 xBA, .320 xSLG, 33.3 Whiff%), and his slider was almost as good. He threw those breaking balls a combined 50% of the time. However, his 93-mph fastball, which he threw 45% of the time, got hammered by big leaguers to the tune of a .334 xBA and .743 xSLG. The margin for error is much smaller against big-league hitters, but if Detmers can have a better plan and better execution of when and where he throws his fastball, he clearly has the secondaries to be a high-strikeout big-league starter as early as this season.
Detmers' fastball sits at around 91-92 mph (touches 94), but that did not prevent him from absolutely dominating college hitters over his last two seasons at Louisville. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound southpaw had a 1.23 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 48:6 K:BB in 22 innings as a junior and threw another 50 innings between the alternate site and instructs. His command, pitchability and competitiveness are elite, which is why he is able to get the most out of his stuff. He locates his fastball, which has above-average vertical drop, wherever he wants and complements it with a plus mid-70s curveball. Detmers throws his fastball and curveball in any count and gets whiffs inside and outside of the zone. His slider and changeup could each be average offerings. He seems to have the tools to produce like a No. 2 or No. 3 starter while having fringe-to-average fastball velocity. Detmers could debut this summer if a need arises.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Strong trade candidate
PLos Angeles Angels
June 12, 2026
Detmers is considered a strong trade candidate ahead of this year's deadline, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Analysis
The Angels are widely expected to be sellers ahead of this year's deadline, and Detmers is one of their most attractive trade chips. He's been impressive of late, posting a 1.73 ERA with a 0.54 WHIP and 36 strikeouts across his last 26 innings. With two years of club control remaining, the time is now if the Angels want to deal the 26-year-old hurler and get a strong package in return.
