2026 Fantasy Outlook
While Messick is clearly a big-league starter due to the depth of his arsenal and his ability to handle a heavy workload, he performed a little over his head across seven starts in the majors to close 2025. Messick is a crafty, 25-year-old lefty with a burly 6-foot, 225-pound frame and three straight years of 121-plus innings. He logged a 3.47 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 18.8 K-BB% across 98.2 innings (20 starts) at Triple-A before logging a 2.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 39.2 innings for the big club. His 3.6 percent walk rate and 47.9 percent groundball rate in the majors were easily better than any such rates he logged in the minors, while his 11.5 percent swinging-strike rate was lower than at any of his minor-league stops. Messick throws two distinct low-90s fastballs as well as a slider, curveball and changeup -- all of which were thrown at least 13 percent of the time in the majors. His two breaking balls have extreme horizontal movement and he logged a 31.2 percent whiff rate with his changeup, which is reserved primarily for right-handed batters. Given how well he pitched in the majors, Messick should be penciled into the Opening Day rotation, just don't expect him to prevent runs at the same clip over a full season. Read Past Outlooks
Limits damage in no-decision
Messick did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts over five innings.
Analysis
Messick allowed a run in the first inning but rebounded with four scoreless frames despite generating just four whiffs on 100 pitches and tossing only one clean inning. The 25-year-old, who recently earned his first career All-Star nod, was able to turn the page on a subpar June in which he went 1-4 with a 4.26 ERA. He owns a strong 2.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 109:32 K:BB across 106 innings this season and lines up for a road matchup with the Marlins next weekend.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Messick's dominance at Double-A last season oversells his pure stuff, but he's a crafty southpaw with a deep repertoire and good enough command to start. The 6-foot, 225-pound lefty was his normal solid self at High-A (20.1 K-BB%, 3.57 ERA, 1.28 WHIP), but he took things up a notch at Double-A, logging a 2.06 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 24.3 K-BB% over 65.2 innings. Messick logged over 120 innings for the second year in a row, building up to a career-best 133.2 frames while splitting the year evenly between High-A and Double-A. His low-90s fastball (touches 96 mph) has good movement, which allows the pitch to play up in the zone, and his low-80s changeup is a borderline plus offering. He also mixes in a cutter, slider and curveball, none of which are above-average, but they're good enough offerings to keep hitters off balance. The Guardians have no shortage of rotation options in the upper levels of the minors, and Messick isn't on the 40-man roster yet, but he could still pitch his way to the show in the second half of 2025.
