2026 Fantasy Outlook
Schultz was shut down in September with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, which was reportedly an issue for him throughout his disappointing 2025 campaign. The 6-foot-10 southpaw entered 2025 as a consensus top 30 prospect, but after he logged a 9.5 K-BB% and 1.67 WHIP in 73 innings across Double-A and Triple-A, there will be more wide-ranging valuations on Schultz this offseason. He has been handled carefully by the White Sox since they drafted him No. 26 overall out of high school in 2022. He dealt with a flexor strain in 2023 and has only thrown five-plus innings in 10 of his 50 pro starts -- all 10 of which came last year at Double-A. Schultz's fastball and slider are 70-grade pitches when he's on, and it's dangerous to give up on toolsy lefty starters when they're only 22. He made five starts at Triple-A and will surely return there to start 2026. If he's healthy and pounding the zone this spring, Schultz's value will shoot back up. Read Past Outlooks

Analysis
After being called up from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the week, the 6-foot-10 lefty had an uneven MLB debut Tuesday against the Rays. Schultz recorded four strikeouts and induced five swinging strikes with a fastball that averaged 96.8 miles per hour over 4.1 innings, but the control problems that plagued him in the minors last season cropped up again, as he issued four walks. Though he'll have a good opportunity to add to his punchout total against an Athletics offense that owns the third-highest strikeout rate in the majors (25.7 percent) this season, pitching in a hitter-friendly environment in Sacramento will make him a risky lineup option for fantasy managers who are looking to protect their ratios.

Stat Review
How does Noah Schultz compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Unfortunately, we didn't learn much about Schultz in 2024, despite the fact he was healthy all season. He never threw more than four innings or 67 pitches in a start, so he never got to face a batter a third time. The 6-foot-9 southpaw logged 89.1 innings across High-A and Double-A after logging 27 innings and averaging fewer than three innings per start at Single-A in 2023. His fastball/slider combo is elite, and same-handed batters registered a .449 OPS against him. Schultz's decent changeup is a clear third pitch, and righties did a bit better against him with a .588 OPS, so refining that changeup while building his workload will be the points of emphasis going forward. Despite Chicago's delicate handling of Schultz last year, he should be assigned to Triple-A for his age-21 season after putting up a 1.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 58.5 percent groundball rate in 61 innings at Double-A. He may generate buzz early in spring training if he gets to pitch in big-league camp.
Schultz showed off one of the best sliders in the minors last season while also dealing with shoulder trouble that adds risk to the profile. The 6-foot-9 southpaw was selected out of high school with the 26th overall pick in 2022, but he has been limited to 27 pro innings and he turns 21 in August. The lanky southpaw boasts a mid-90s fastball that plays up due to his deceptive release point to go with his wipeout low-80s slider. He dominated Single-A hitters in 10 short starts and didn't need his third-pitch changeup much. Schultz looks like an elite pitching prospect if we're just judging on stuff, projection and in-game results, but he's also extremely risky given the injuries already on his ledger and his inability (thus far) to handle a starter's workload.
