2026 Fantasy Outlook
Burrows was on the verge of breaking camp with the Pirates in 2023, but he suffered an untimely elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery to repair. That leaves 2025 as his only substantial sample in the majors, when he made 23 appearances (19 starts) while working 96.0 total innings. As those numbers indicate, Pittsburgh kept a close eye on Burrows' workload, as he was only allowed to complete six frames in an appearance twice all season. It's worth taking some of his metrics with a grain of salt as a result - he very rarely faced an opposing lineup three times -- but he did showcase encouraging skills in the sample. Burrows threw four pitches at least 10 percent of the time, highlighted by a strong slider and changeup. He also pumped his fastball in at 95.5 mph, a combination that led to a 16.7 K-BB%. Burrow surrendered a bit more hard contact than is desirable, though a 41 percent groundball rate helped him limit his HR/9 to a palatable 1.22. Being sent to the Astros should boost Burrows' potential for wins, though his home park factor doesn't change much. He likely doesn't have more upside than what he displayed in 2025, but his raw totals should increase as he'll be relied upon to provide more innings another year removed from surgery. Hit hard in third loss
Burrows (1-3) took the loss Monday against the Mariners, allowing six runs on 11 hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out three.
Analysis
Although Burrows fired 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes and amassed 17 swinging strikes, he was perhaps a bit too haphazard in targeting the zone Monday. The Mariners tagged him for four-extra base hits, with two leaving the yard off the bat of Josh Naylor, and Burrows wound up giving up a career-high 11 hits and matching a career worst in runs allowed. The 26-year-old right-hander is off to a rocky start in his Astros tenure, posting a 6.55 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB over 22 frames, but he'll have an opportunity to turn things around in a favorable home matchup against the Cardinals this weekend.

2023
Burrows' future role is uncertain, but he made a promising return from Tommy John surgery in the second half of last season. He has the repertoire (full four-pitch mix) to start and more often than not, Burrows has displayed the requisite control to start. He had a 4.06 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB in 37.2 innings over 10 appearances (nine starts) at Triple-A and also got a 3.1-inning relief appearance in the majors on the penultimate day of the season. Burrows' 8.9 percent walk rate at Triple-A was perfectly acceptable, especially for a pitcher just returning from April 2023 TJS, and he notched a 10-strikeout start in five innings and a seven-strikeout start in 3.1 innings, displaying the ability to rack up Ks when everything's working. He averaged 94.5 mph and 17 inches of induced vertical break on his fastball while leaning on his improved mid-80s changeup and signature upper-70s curveball for whiffs. Even prior to his surgery, Burrows struggled to handle a full season's workload, maxing out at 94.1 innings in 2022. Rotation depth is the closest thing the Pirates have to a strength, so Burrows should get stretched out in big-league spring training and ultimately open his age-25 season in the Triple-A rotation. From there, he could be summoned throughout the year as a swing man, and could also step into a long-term opening in the rotation if circumstances align.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might be Houston-bound
The Astros, Pirates and Rays are working on a three-team trade that would send Burrows to Houston, Chandler Rome of The Athletic report.
Analysis
If the deal goes through, it would be Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum and Mason Montgomery going to Pittsburgh and Jacob Melton and Anderson Brito heading to Tampa Bay. Burrows hasn't drawn as much attention as some of the Pirates' other young pitchers, but he had a terrific showing in 2025, producing a 3.94 ERA and 97:31 K:BB over 96 innings covering 19 starts and four relief outings. He's under team control through 2031, so Burrows would satisfy the Astros' desire to add controllable rotation help.
