2024 Fantasy Outlook
Evaluators have long suggested Baumann might be better served as a reliever since his command has been too shaky to hold down a starting role. Baltimore actually made that transition last spring, deploying the 28-year-old in shorter stints out the bullpen. He still made many multiple inning appearances (20), but the move to relief resulted in higher velocity on Baumann's 4-seam fastball, which he threw 96.4 mph on average while topping out close to triple digits. The right-hander also found success with his curveball to raise his strikeout rate from the teens to a still-below-average 22.3%. Baumann's 10 wins were 2nd-most among qualified relievers, but his walk issues remained (12.1%) and the contact he gave up was often smoked. Look for him to continue pitching out of the O's bullpen in 2024 as he attempts to improve his control. Read Past Outlooks

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Baumann broke camp with the Orioles as a reliever in 2022, but he was often shuttled between the big leagues and Triple-A Norfolk. In the majors, he had a subpar 4.72 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across 13 games (four starts). He wasn't much better in the minors, logging a 4.20 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 81:25 K:BB through 60 innings in 20 appearances (nine starts). At 27 years old, Baumann's running out of time to establish himself as a major-league starter, especially with several Baltimore prospects knocking on the door. He boasts a four-pitch repertoire headlined by a four-seamer that touches 96 mph and a 91.5 mph slider that generated a 22.5 percent whiff rate in the majors in 2022. Baumann has a career 47.1 percent groundball rate in the majors, so that works in his favor, but he'll likely be competing for a back-end rotation spot in 2023 and could again be a player that sees an evolving role throughout the season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could see high-leverage chances
Mariners pitching coach Pete Woodworth indicated Wednesday that Baumann could work his way into a high-leverage bullpen role, reports Brent Stecker of SeattleSprots.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was acquired from Balitmore in late May after being designated for assignment and has yet to allow an earned run in four appearances for Seattle. Baumann hasn't consistently filled a high-leverage role as a big leaguer, but he posted a 3.76 ERA and tallied six holds last season for the Orioles. Andres Munoz has a clear hold on the closer role, but it's possible Baumann joins Ryne Stanek in the setup mix.
