2026 Fantasy Outlook
Scherzer dealt with a thumb issue during spring training but was able to take his turn in the Opening Day rotation. He aggravated the injury in his Blue Jays debut and ultimately missed nearly three months. Despite lingering soreness, Scherzer finished the regular season with 17 starts covering 85 innings and added three postseason starts. His 5.19 ERA was the worst of his career, though ERA estimators suggested it was more than half a run too high. His strikeout and walk rates were largely unchanged from the prior season, but his 2.01 HR/9 marked a career high. As a fly ball pitcher, Scherzer is prone to home runs, but last season the issue was more pronounced than usual. He intends to pitch in his age-41 season, and while the strikeout and walk rates remain intact, durability concerns persist, and landing in a power-suppressing environment would be key to maintaining mixed league relevance. Rises to occasion Saturday
Scherzer gave up two hits and two walks over 4.2 scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. He struck out five.
Analysis
With Tarik Skubal on the mound for Detroit, Scherzer's competitive fire kicked in even in a low-stakes exhibition game, and he tossed 42 of 65 pitches for strikes before exiting the mound with the Jays ahead 1-0. Scherzer has yet to give up a run in two spring starts since re-signing with Toronto in late February, posting a 6:3 K:BB in 8.2 innings, and with Jose Berrios (elbow) looking uncertain for Opening Day, the 41-year-old appears ticketed for a spot in the rotation to begin 2026.

The future Hall of Famer is clearly in his twilight years, but Scherzer said in September that he wants to continue pitching in 2025. His return from back surgery was delayed several times and he ended up making just nine starts for the Rangers in between IL stints last season, posting a 3.95 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 40:10 K:BB over 43.1 innings. Shoulder fatigue cost him most of the second half and a left hamstring strain officially ended his campaign. While he made at least 23 starts in each of the three seasons prior to 2024, that means less at his advanced age of 40. Scherzer had the second-lowest strikeout rate of his career (22.6%) and remains unsigned as of mid-December. He can still be part of a winning fantasy club, but draft him for who he is now and not the name.

Talking with Toronto
The Blue Jays and Scherzer have gotten more serious with their discussions over the past week, and Toronto appears to be Scherzer's most serious pursuer, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis
While Nicholson-Smith notes other teams are in the mix for Scherzer, a return to Toronto seems to be the most likely outcome at this point. Scherzer will turn 42 years old in July and started all 17 regular-season games in which he appeared last season, registering a 5.19 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 82:23 K:BB across 85 innings for the Blue Jays. He was better in the postseason, turning in a 3.77 ERA and 11:6 K:BB across three playoff starts.
