2026 Fantasy Outlook
After having his career seemingly derailed by injuries a few years ago, Boyd has had a nice second act the last few seasons. In 2024, the veteran lefty looked sharp for Cleveland across eight starts toward the end of the year after returning from Tommy John surgery. Boyd parlayed that into a two-year, $29 million contract with the Cubs before the start of the 2025 season, and he managed to mostly sustain his strong form from the year before. The southpaw posted a 3.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 154 strikeouts across 179.2 innings, with that workload his largest since 2019. Boyd's velocity has stayed intact following his surgery, and the 92.8 mph average fastball he clocked in 2025 actually represented a new career high. Heading into 2026, Boyd seems well positioned to build on the last two years, and he could very well see his workload tick upward as well. The 34-year-old may see his ratios get a little worse with a higher volume of innings, but he could also see his wins and strikeouts increase, making Boyd an attractive mid-tier fantasy option. Analysis
Boyd underwent successful menisectomy surgery on his left knee last week, and the veteran left-hander told reporters Friday that it's "all good news" when it comes to his recovery. The recovery timeline for Boyd is six weeks, and if all goes according to plan, he will be back with the Cubs in mid-to-late June.

The Cubs are betting big on what Boyd showed with Cleveland last season after he returned from Tommy John surgery. A $29 million investment is a lot for pitcher that has barely logged 200 total innings in the majors over the last four years, but Boyd was as good as ever after signing with Cleveland in June, posting a 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB across 39.2 innings spanning eight regular-season starts. He added 11.2 frames with a 0.77 ERA in the postseason. Boyd has been on the radar for years and is now entering his age-34 campaign. The lefty had flexor tendon surgery in 2021 before ultimately needing TJS, so to say he's a health risk would be an understatement. Fantasy managers should be prepared to move on at a moment's notice.
