2026 Fantasy Outlook
Montgomery's first full season in the majors didn't live up to the potential he showcased during his 2024 cup of coffee with the Rays. The 25-year-old's surface stats were lackluster across 46 innings with Tampa Bay, while his 12.9 percent walk rate was 10th-worst among relievers who logged a minimum of 40 innings. However, Montgomery had one of the highest discrepancies between ERA (5.67) and xFIP (3.56) and was unlucky given the expected batting average against his fastball (.266) was more promising than his actual results (.311). The southpaw added velocity on his four-seamer - it averaged 98.7 mph (97th percentile), which was nearly a mile-and-a-half faster than 2024 - while producing the 11th-highest whiff rate for the pitch type at 31.4 percent. There's upside in Montgomery's profile, and after a recent trade to Pittsburgh, there's a path for him to work his way up the Pirates' high leverage hierarchy in 2026. Read Past Outlooks
Working as opener Sunday
Montgomery is starting Sunday's matchup versus Atlanta, likely as an opener ahead of Bubba Chandler, Jason Mackey of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
This will be the fourth time this season that Montgomery has been deployed as an opener. He's been effective in that role, tossing a scoreless inning in each of his first three starts. From a fantasy perspective, however, it means that Montgomery won't be eligible to notch a win, hold or save.

Montgomery was once a highly rated prospect in the Rays organization, but he was becoming increasingly more hittable as he moved up in the organization, and the club decided to move him to the pen after a July 12th loss left him 0-6 with a 6.62 ERA in the Durham rotation. Montgomery then went on to work in the bullpen for the Bulls where he struck out 30 in 18.1 innings of work and earned a promotion to the big leagues in early September. Montgomery went on to strike out 17 of the 37 batters he faced in September with a new-found upper 90s fastball and sharp slider. Simply put, Montgomery has found his new home in the bullpen as someone who can come in and get punches when needed and should be particularly tough on lefties with his fastball/slider combination if he and the club choose to pair down his offerings to that combination. As it stands now, he could be the primary lefty out of the pen in high-leverage situations with the departure of Colin Poche who previously held that role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
High hopes from Pittsburgh
The Pirates have high expectations for Montgomery after acquiring him from the Rays in December, with GM Ben Cherington noting that the left-hander is "a particularly good fit at PNC [Park]", reports John Perrotto of PittsburghBaseballNow.com.
Analysis
Montgomery was part of the three-team trade that also brought Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum to Pittsburgh. The left-hander scuffled a bit in 2025 with a 5.67 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 57 appearances, but he has an electric fastball that averaged nearly 99 mph. Montgomery could quickly work his way into a high-leverage role if he can right the ship in Pittsburgh.
