2026 Fantasy Outlook
Both Severino and the A's surprised last winter with a three-year, $67 million pact, the largest guarantee in Athletics franchise history. Money talks, but it was surprising for the pitcher in that the team was moving to a minor-league band box in Sacramento, and sure enough, Severino struggled in a major way at home at Sutter Health Park (2-9, 6.01 ERA). He also missed time in the second half with a left oblique strain. The right-hander was better following his return from injury in September, pitching to a 3.08 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB in his final five starts (26.1 innings). It was always an odd fit on paper and a trade is possible, though the A's don't seem interested in simply dumping his salary. Severino is better than he showed last season, but a strikeout rate below 20 percent two of the last three years should temper any enthusiasm for a potential bounce-back campaign. Read Past Outlooks
No decision vs. Toronto
Severino did not factor into the decision in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three across five innings.
Analysis
Severino went relatively unscathed through the first four innings of Friday's start. He gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead after yielding a two-run triple to Andres Gimenez in the fifth frame, but Severino escaped with the no decision after Shea Langeliers tied things up at 2-2 in the ninth with a solo homer off Jeff Hoffman. It was a solid start to the season for Severino, who is looking to bounce back from a 2025 campaign in which he posted an 8-11 record (across 29 starts) with a 4.54 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 124:50 K:BB across 162.2 innings. He's slated to make his next start next week on the road against Atlanta.

Severino settled for a one-year, "pillow" contract from the Mets last offseason and went on to make 30-plus starts for the first time since 2018. The right-hander incorporated a sinker as one of his primary pitches for the first time in his career and also mostly ditched his slider in favor of a sweeper. The pitch mix change resulted in just a 21.2 percent strikeout rate, although in his final 13 starts between the regular season and playoffs he upped that rate to 24.8 percent. If Severino is now more willing to sacrifice swings and misses for contact earlier in counts, it could make him more of a floor than a ceiling play. He'll experience contextual downgrades across the board after signing a three-year deal with the Athletics, which also works to cap his ceiling in the wins department.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Sticking in Sacramento?
Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report that the A's would rather retain Severino for 2026 rather than simply dumping his salary via trade this winter.
Analysis
The right-hander inked a two-year, $45 million contract with the Athletics last winter that includes a player option for 2026, but he struggled to a 4.54 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 124:50 K:BB across 162.2 innings last season. Some teams are apparently willing to fully take on what remains of Severino's contract, but the A's would prefer a trade return centered on prospects. The organization could instead bank on Severino getting back on track early in 2026 before flipping him ahead of the trade deadline.
