Nets $31 million contract extension

June 9, 2026
The Brewers agreed to a seven-year, $31 million contract extension with Lara on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
The deal includes three club options, potentially locking Lara up through the 2035 season, and it can max out at $79 million. It's another pre-arbitration contract extension completed by the Brewers after they inked Cooper Pratt to an eight-year, $50.75 million contract extension in April. Lara entered the 2026 season without much hype but has particularly broken through from a power perspective, slashing .338/.447/.500 with seven home runs, 18 stolen bases and a 39:32 BB:K over 56 games with Triple-A Nashville. The 21-year-old will need to be added to the 40-man roster once the extension is official, which clears a potential hurdle to Lara being promoted to the majors. Lara could take over as the Brewers' primary center fielder at some point this summer.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Lara reached High-A last season before his 19th birthday. He was aggressively assigned to Single-A to start the season after having only played in the Dominican Summer League in 2022. Power is the weakest part of Lara's game, but he has a chance to be a plus hitter, plus runner and quality defender in center field. The 5-foot-7 switch hitter gets high praise for his makeup and polish, which is why he was able to handle playing against much older competition in his stateside debut. Lara hit .285 at Single-A and .290 at High-A while being better than league average at both stops (116 wRC+ at Single-A, 107 wRC+ at High-A). His strikeout rate was below 20 percent at both stops and he stole 30 bases on 40 attempts in 87 games. He only hit two home runs, but his 110-mph max exit velocity suggests he could potentially get to double-digit homer power during his prime.
