2026 Fantasy Outlook
The 2025 season -- which included three separate IL stints and a move to the bullpen -- was not the most productive year for McCullers from a fantasy/statistical perspective. However, the success was in the fact that he returned to the majors after two full seasons on the shelf while recovering from surgery to repair a torn right flexor tendon in his right forearm. His first start against the White Sox on May 4 marked his first pitch thrown in a major-league game since the 2022 World Series. It's hard to envision seeing McCullers return to the rotation given his injury history and the talent on the Astros roster, but his solid groundball rate (47.6 percent) could translate well into a long-relief role out of the bullpen, which would give him some deep fantasy value in leagues that reward holds. Begins mound work
Astros manager Joe Espada said Saturday that McCullers (shoulder) has resumed throwing off a mound, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
McCullers is being eased along slowly in his throwing program after landing on the shelf May 19 due to right shoulder inflammation. He still looks to be multiple weeks away from a return, as he'll need to complete multiple bullpen sessions and face live hitters before being cleared to head out on what will most likely be a multi-start minor-league rehab assignment. With both Hunter Brown (shoulder) and Cristian Javier (shoulder) poised to beat him back from the injured list, McCullers may not have a rotation spot waiting for him upon his activation. The 32-year-old righty struggled to a 6.86 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 39.1 innings in his eight starts before hitting the IL.

Once a dependable rotation piece for the Astros Dynasty, McCullers spent 2024 rehabbing from flexor tendon surgery and hasn't pitched on a big-league mound since the 2022 World Series (he also made just eight regular-season starts that year while recovering from a similar procedure). He has two years and $35.4 million left on his contract, so the opportunities will be there if he can get healthy. The right-hander had a 3.16 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 185:76 K:BB over 162.1 innings during his last full season in 2021, but he's since undergone multiple arm surgeries that carried complications. McCullers could be worth a flyer if he's able to enter camp in good shape, but there shouldn't be any serious expectations for him in 2025. Even if he looks like his old self, he's likely to have a limited workload.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Close to returning to MLB roster
McCullers could make an appearance in the big leagues sooner rather than later for the Astros, according to Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors.
Analysis
McCullers began the season on the injured list as he works back from multiple arm surgeries, but the veteran right-hander looks close to making his first MLB appearance in three years. McCullers tossed 50 pitches in an outing for Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, and he could be part of the big-league rotation within the next couple of weeks.
