2026 Fantasy Outlook
The 2025 season was an odd one for Senga. He got off to a superb start, collecting a 1.47 ERA and 70:31 K:BB across 73.2 innings covering his first 13 outings. Senga strained his hamstring in that 13th outing, which held him out of action for a month, and he looked lost upon his return, posting a 5.90 ERA over nine starts before being shockingly demoted to Triple-A Syracuse. The smart money is on the hamstring issue throwing Senga's mechanics off and him being unable to right that ship, but even when Senga was healthy early in the season, the strikeouts were down and the control was iffy. The Ghost Fork remained a deadly pitch for Senga in 2025 (.210 xwOBA, 41.8 percent whiff rate), but the league didn't have trouble with the rest of his repertoire. He'll likely be better in 2026 if he can stay off the injured list, but Senga might have peaked in his rookie season. Read Past Outlooks

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Senga (back) played catch Wednesday, and the right-hander is progressing in his recovery, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.
Analysis
"[Senga's] feeling a lot better, so now we've got to build him back up," Mendoza relayed Wednesday. Senga is working through lumbar spine inflammation that caused him to land on the 15-day injured list in late April. He'll struggled to a 9.00 ERA and 1.95 WHIP across 20 innings prior to landing on the IL, and he may need a lengthy rehab assignment before being cleared to return to the big leagues.

Stat Review
How does Kodai Senga compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
2017
Expectations for Senga were high coming into 2024, especially with how he closed the 2023 season once he was fully acclimated to the major league environment. However, Senga pitched fewer major league innings than Spencer Strider in 2024, as a shoulder capsule injury late in camp shelved him until late July. Senga then came back to pitch on July 26 only to injure his calf muscle and then miss the remainder of the regular season. All we have to move forward with a valuation of the pitcher is the recency bias of his health around just how awesome his ghost fork pitch is for results. That fork ball had a 60 percent whiff rate in 2023, which is beyond absurd, but his cutter and four-seamer also did very well. There is no doubt Senga has the stuff to be a staff ace for the Mets and fantasy teams, but the recent health issues are a vivid reminder of what his downside can be. We almost suggest treating Senga as you did Chris Sale in 2024 drafts; focus on the upside while determining just how comfortable you are with the downside.
Senga's first year in the majors couldn't have gone much better from an individual standpoint, as he made 29 starts and posted a 2.98 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 202:77 K:BB across 166.1 innings. He joined the Mets on a three-year, $45 million contract after spending the first 11 years of his career in Japan, and he ended up being a bright spot on what was mostly a disappointing team in Queens. The 31-year-old struggled with walks -- his 11.1 percent walk rate was third worst among qualified starters -- but he helped offset the free passes with a 29.1 percent strikeout rate, 0.92 HR/9 and 80.3 percent left-on-base rate. A 3.87 xERA and 3.77 xFIP are hardly a surprise given his walks, though it's a right shoulder strain that is of utmost concern for prospective fantasy managers. The Mets shut Senga down in February and he will not pick up a baseball "until symptoms subside and strength returns," per president of baseball operations David Stearns.
Senga has been one of Japan's best pitchers over the last decade, anchoring the staff for a Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks team that won six NPB titles. The Hawks don't allow their players to leave via the posting system, however, so Senga had to wait until his age-30 season to try his luck against the toughest level of competition. The righty has a large repertoire led by a fastball that has touched triple digits and a devastating forkball. Those weapons have helped him to a 2.59 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 28.2 percent strikeout rate over the course of his career. He made the jump at the right time, having posted an even better 1.94 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in his final year in Japan. The Mets landed Senga for $75 million over five years, but he will assuredly use his opt-out clause after the 2025 season if he is healthy and has shown an ability to be effective in MLB. He has room to take a sizable step back from his NPB numbers and still serve as a capable mid-rotation arm at the MLB level, with upside for more, though durability could be a concern. He's eclipsed 150 innings in just one of the last six seasons.
The Japanese 23 year-old fastball/spliter pitcher emerged as a starter for Softbank Hawks in 2016.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Available in trade talks?
PNew York Mets
November 18, 2025
The Mets are making Senga available in trade talks, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Analysis
It's not surprising to see Senga being made available in trade talks, as he's coming off a disappointing 2025 regular season where he posted a 3.02 ERA and a career-worst 1.31 WHIP across 22 starts and 113.1 innings. The Mets don't think Senga will be an option to move to the bullpen, so it seems they're gauging his trade value as a starter before deciding on whether to accept offers for him or not. For what it's worth, Senga is "extremely available," according to Passan, and he's already generating interest from teams around the majors.
