Begins season in rookie ball

Maitan reported to rookie-level Orem last week and has appeared in five game, recording nine hits and a 2:2 BB:K over 20 at-bats.
ANALYSIS
Maitan, the top prospect the Braves were forced to surrender this winter after violating baseball's protocol for international signings, latched on with the Angels in December on a $2.2 million signing bonus. The 18-year-old got off on the wrong foot with his new organization after reporting to camp in poor shape, prompting the Angels to keep him at extended spring training for about two months to work on his conditioning. Maitan is off to a sizzling start in the Pioneer League, but don't expect a quick promotion to a full-season affiliate after he struggled across 42 games with two of the Braves' rookie-level affiliates in 2017.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Maitan was such a premier amateur talent that the Braves allegedly agreed to sign him when he was just 14 -- at least two years before he was eligible to sign on July 2, 2016. This impropriety, and other similar dealings, cost former Braves general manager John Coppolella his job, and led to Maitan being declared a free agent this winter. He eventually signed with the Angels for $2.2 million. For such a high-demand asset, his production in his first pro season doesn't seem to match the hype, but he was 3.3 years younger than the average player in the Appalachian League. Many evaluators still see a switch hitter with the potential for a plus hit tool and special power. The 17-year-old prodigy showed up in 2016 at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, and got in worse shape as the season went on. However, he diligently worked on his conditioning this offseason, and while he will continue to fill out, the industry consensus is that he will be able to handle third base. There is plenty of risk, but he remains a top 100 prospect due to his significant upside.
Maitan came along at just the right time to be hyped beyond what some may see as reasonable expectations. Is he the next Miguel Cabrera? The best international prospect since Miguel Sano? That's what some evaluators hint at, and given the lack of a Bryce Harper or Stephen Strasburg level prospect in the 2016 draft, some prospect hounds may see Maitan as the best player available in dynasty league drafts this spring. He was the clear prize of the July 2 international signing period, and Atlanta seemed to have him wrapped up long before players could officially sign. A switch-hitting shortstop who figures to move to third base as his 6-foot-2 frame fills out, Maitan offers electric bat speed and a knack for putting barrel to ball that could lead to plus or even plus-plus grades on his hit and power tools in time. A brief run in the Gulf Coast League followed by an assignment to the Appalachian League is a conservative projection of how his age-17 season will play out.
