2026 Fantasy Outlook
With A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (elbow) set to miss most - if not all - of the 2026 season, Ginkel (shoulder) stands as the Arizona's most experienced option for closing duties. Of course, the 31-year-old would first need to prove he has recovered from the right shoulder sprain that ended his 2025 campaign prematurely. Assuming he's healthy by the end of spring training, Ginkel makes sense to take on the bulk of save chances during the first half of 2026. He has 16 career saves and was in the mix for the closer role before he got hurt last year. He's also set to for free-agency in 2027 and could become a trade candidate if the D'Backs don't perform to expectations. Not only does Ginkel need to rebound health-wise, he'll need to improve his performance after stumbling to a 7.36 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 25.2 innings last year. Read Past Outlooks
Takes loss Friday
Ginkel (0-1) allowed one run on two hits over one inning, picking up the loss in Friday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis
Ginkel was handed a tough assignment in his first appearance of the season, entering a tie game in the eighth inning with a switch hitter and two lefties due up. The Diamondbacks have an all-righty bullpen, and manager Torey Lovullo tabbed Ginkel as one of the relievers designated to get lefties. He gave up a leadoff double to Alex Freeland and a run-scoring single to Kyle Tucker two batters later. Ginkel will be part of a late-game crew along with Ryan Thompson, who pitched the seventh inning Friday, and Paul Sewald, who has yet to pitch.

Ginkel recorded five saves as Arizona's closer when Paul Sewald began the 2024 season on the injured list. When Sewald returned, Ginkel was relegated to setup duties for the remainder of the campaign, but the right-hander established new career-highs in games played (72), innings (70), strikeouts (77) and holds (18). His 5.2 percent walk rate was also the best of his career and a 3.9 percentage point improvement over 2023. Perhaps most impressively, Ginkel pitched through a fractured leg across the final four months of the season after getting hit by a comebacker in early June. He never went on the injured list and his numbers suggest he wasn't hindered by any discomfort, as he maintained a 2.81 ERA and 57:10 K:BB over 48 innings after the incident. Ginkel's leg should fully heal with rest this offseason, but check his status this spring if your speculating on him for ancillary saves late in drafts.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
In mix for ninth-inning duties
Ginkel was mentioned by manager Torey Lovullo as one of the candidates to open the 2026 season as the Diamondbacks' closer, according to Alex D'Agostino of SI.com.
Analysis
Lovullo wants to have a defined closer in place for the start of the 2026 season, but it's unclear whether Ginkel will win the job over the other candidates, a list that includes Paul Sewald and Ryan Thompson. For what it's worth, the Diamondbacks have A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez out due to elbow injuries, and both should be in the mix for closing opportunities once they return. Ginkel didn't have the best season in 2025, though, as injuries limited him to just 25.2 regular-season innings, during which he posted a 7.36 ERA and 29:13 K:BB.
