Making case for roster spot
Waldichuk gave up two hits and struck out six without walking anyone over 2.2 scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.
Analysis
The 28-year-old southpaw still got to face some quality big-league hitters after he entered the game to begin the bottom of the fifth inning -- he struck out Yainer Diaz and Christian Walker back-to-back in the sixth -- and Waldichuk built up to 41 pitches (28 strikes) before exiting. Waldichuk was once a promising Yankees prospect many years and injuries ago, and since being claimed off waivers by the Nationals in early February, he's posted a 1.35 ERA and 8:3 K:BB over 6.2 spring frames. Washington's Opening Day rotation seems set after the Zack Littell signing, but Waldichuk might be putting himself forward as a long-relief candidate in the big-league bullpen. More likely, he'll be optioned to Triple-A Rochester and stay stretched out to be on call in case injuries hit the starting staff.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
Waldichuk was slated to begin the season on the 60-day IL as he was still recovering from a Tenex procedure and PRP injection on his left UCL and flexor tendon performed in late October 2023. Unfortunately, Waldichuk suffered a setback in late April, resulting in Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure. The southpaw hopes to return sometime in the second half. Historically, command and control are slow to return after surgery of this nature, and those are Waldichuk's main pitfalls. The Athletics fortified their rotation this offseason, so there is a good chance Waldichuk spends most of the second half in the minors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could re-enter rotation
According to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle, Waldichuk could be re-inserted into Oakland's rotation as a sixth starter during the team's upcoming road trip, which begins Friday and runs through June 11.
Analysis
The left-hander worked as an opener last weekend and was used out of the bullpen Wednesday, but he could soon be back in the rotation. Waldichuk pitched just one frame in both of those outings and topped out at 23 pitches, so he could have some workload limitations if asked to start again. Regardless, the 25-year-old isn't worth fantasy consideration with a 7.46 ERA and 49:32 K:BB across 50.2 innings this year.
