2026 Fantasy Outlook
Montero showed a lot of promise in his debut season in the majors in 2024, including a three-hit shutout performance against the Rockies on September 10. Although Montero was not part of the Tigers' Opening Day roster in 2025, he still appeared in 20 major-league games while serving both in the rotation and out of the bullpen. He finished with a 5-3 record with a 4.37 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 72:31 K:BB across 90.2 major-league innings in 2025, but he demonstrated noticeable improvement over his last five outings with Detroit (2.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB over 24.1 innings). Montero's fastball velocity dipped noticeably to 93.8 mph from 94.6 mph in 2024, so that is an area of concern for those looking to take a flyer on the 25-year-old right-hander. He is by no means a lock for the Opening Day roster, but there would be a path toward a roster spot for Montero with a strong performance in spring training, coupled with the injury progressions of Reese Olson and Beau Brieske. Quality start in no-decision
Montero took a no-decision against the Royals on Friday, giving up one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out four batters over six innings.
Analysis
After allowing a double to Jac Caglianone and a single to Isaac Collins to give Kansas City its first run in the second inning, Montero retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced and finished the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead. A late-game collapse from Detroit's bullpen forced the 25-year-old to settle for a no-decision, but it was still a very strong start despite the outcome. He's allowed just two earned runs over his last 12.2 innings and will aim to keep the good times rolling during his next start against the struggling Mets.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Following a 2023 campaign in which he made both his Double-A and Triple-A debuts, Montero reached the majors for the first time in 2024. Like a lot of young pitchers, the 24-year-old had some ups and downs, and he finished with a 4.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77 strikeouts across 98.1 innings. Montero flashed some high-end potential, like when he tossed a complete-game shutout on Sept. 10 against Colorado, but he'll need to be more consistent to take the next step as a player. The righty also saw his K/9 dip to 7.06 after he posted marks above 10.0 in each of his last two seasons in the minors. Montero throws hard enough, with a fastball that averaged 94.7 mph last year, so there could be room for growth in the strikeout department. Montero at least figures to have the inside track on a rotation spot to begin the 2025 season, as the Tigers don't have a ton of proven MLB starters outside of staff ace Tarik Skubal. Montero carries some risk, but he could be a useful fantasy contributor if his game continues to progress.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might follow opener Monday
The Tigers are considering whether to utilize an opener in front of Montero against the Cardinals on Monday, reports Evan Woodbery of MLive.com.
Analysis
Detroit announced Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty as their starters for Tuesday and Wednesday, but the club has yet to confirm who is pitching in Monday's series opener. Montero followed an opener in his previous outing, and it appears the organization is considering using the strategy again for his next turn through the rotation. The right-hander gave up three runs over 3.1 frames in that appearance, which wasn't an improvement on the 4.15 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB over 21.2 innings he posted while starting in his first four MLB outings of the year.
