Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Hayes, now entering his age-29 season, remains an all-world defender at third base. However, he is near the opposite end of the spectrum offensively. His .306 SLG was the lowest among qualified hitters in 2025, while his .595 OPS was second lowest. After signing Hayes to an eight-year, $70 million extension in 2022, the Pirates eventually developed buyer's remorse, trading him to Cincinnati at the deadline. While Hayes' offensive numbers improved slightly after the move, he still managed just a .656 OPS and three homers in 178 regular-season PA with the Reds. Thanks to his defense, he has racked up an impressive 11.6 fWAR in six major-league seasons. The past two seasons have been especially difficult for him at the dish, though Hayes has at least reached double-digit steals each of the last four years. Cincinnati figures to keep him at the hot corner to begin 2026, health permitting. Read Past Outlooks
Sidelined by back injury
The Reds placed Hayes on the 10-day injured list Friday with a lumbar bulging disc.
Analysis
The third baseman's back has been an issue for years, and per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic it has bothered him off and on this season. The plan is for Hayes to get healed up before reporting to the team's spring training complex in Arizona to initiate his rehab. It sounds like an injury that is likely to keep him out beyond 10 days, and the Reds could want him to find a groove at the plate on a rehab assignment before reinstating him. The 29-year-old is slashing an ugly .142/.195/.225 this season. Sal Stewart will likely continue handling the bulk of the workload at the hot corner in his absence, with Eugenio Suarez also an option once he comes off the IL.

The outlook for Hayes could write itself at this point in his career, as his lack of power and injuries have continued to hold back his fantasy potential. He managed only 396 plate appearances in 2024 while spending two stints on the injured list with back inflammation that cost him a combined two months of the campaign. Even when he was on the field, it was Hayes' worst showing from a skills perspective. His groundball rate jumped to 52.7 percent, which limited him to just four home runs and a .058 ISO. Nearly 2,000 plate appearances into his career, the breakout that the fantasy community has been waiting for from Hayes appears unlikely to occur. However, his defense should keep him locked into an everyday role at third base and his ability to steal bases (11 on 13 attempts in 2024) keep him on the radar in deep mixed formats and NL-only leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Eyeing second Gold Glove
Hayes has been named a finalist for the Gold Glove Award at third base, MLB.com reports.
Analysis
It's hard to believe that Hayes has only won one Gold Glove Award at this point in his career, considering he's known for having one of the best gloves in the National League. He was impressive at the hot corner following a change of scenery, as he was dealt from the Pirates to the Reds prior to the trade deadline. Hayes was named a finalist for the award alongside Ryan McMahon and Matt Shaw.
