2026 Fantasy Outlook
Sterner opened 2025 with an impressive 18-game scoreless streak, but the right-hander allowed 13 earned runs over his next 11 outings before he was optioned back to the minors. After spending a good chunk of the month of June in Triple-A, the 29-year-old was summoned back to the majors, filling a multi-inning role for the Athletics. He was much better upon his return, posting a 2.39 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 40:7 K:BB over his final 37.2 innings. Ultimately, Sterner led A's relievers in appearances (59), strikeouts (69) and holds (16) in 2025 while finishing second with a career-high 64.0 innings pitched. His 1.05 WHIP was a top-40 mark among qualified relievers. Sterner - who tossed more sweepers in 2025 - produced excellent results (.091 BA, .159 SLG, 46.4 percent whiff) with the pitch and could throw even more in 2026, especially if he receives save opportunities. Among current A's relievers, Sterner has one of the best profiles to close. Read Past Outlooks

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Sterner will pitch in middle relief after he was claimed by the A's off waivers from the Rays in the offseason. Sterner had strong strikeout rates in the minors with a 31.4% K% at Triple-A last season. He's been prone to giving up home runs (1.36 HR/9 at Triple-A) and doesn't have great velocity. His upside may also be limited at age 28. Still, he could be a productive reliever for a team desperate for bullpen arms.
