Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Sears made 22 starts for the Athletics in 2025 before being shipped to the Padres, who shuttled him between Triple-A and the majors the rest of the season. Regardless of who he was pitching for, the left-hander had a rough 2025 campaign, finishing with career worsts in ERA (5.04) and WHIP (1.32) while surrendering 30 home runs in just 135.2 frames. Sears once again limited the free passes with a 2.4 BB/9, but he doesn't provide much swing-and-miss with a career 7.5 K/9. Landing with the Padres certainly puts him in a more favorable team situation, but it also amplifies the pressure and could result in him being beat out for a rotation spot. Sears should get some starting chances in 2026 but may not have much volume if he performs poorly early on. Read Past Outlooks
Headed to El Paso

Analysis
Sears will head to Triple-A after producing an 8.44 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with 10 strikeouts over 10.2 innings in four appearances, including two starts, with the Padres during spring training. The 30-year-old signed a one-year contract with San Diego in January, and he will now have to earn another shot with the major-league roster down the road.

2023
The A's spent on a new ace in Luis Severino and traded for Jeffrey Springs from Tampa Bay, but before that, Sears looked like the de facto 2025 Opening Day starter. After all, he led the team in innings and wins among other categories last season. Sears is a lefty with five different pitches, but he's never shown much of a strikeout punch against big-league hitters. To his credit he rarely shoots himself in the foot with walks, and he's been a workhorse in recent years with 353 total innings over the past two seasons. Complicating matters is the move to West Sacramento. Pitching in a PCL park will likely be tough, dinging the home streaming appeal.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing considerable trade interest
The Athletics are receiving "considerable" trade interest in Sears, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Given his 4.95 ERA this season and 4.48 career ERA, Sears is likely more of a fallback option for contending teams. He has displayed plenty of durability, having made 32 starts each of the previous two seasons and 22 already in 2025. Sears will also reach arbitration eligibility for the first time after this season, so he is affordable and under team control through 2028.
