Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Martinez had his best season in the minors last year, posting career-highs across the board on the way to a .963 OPS while stealing 41 bags at three stops, mostly for Triple-A Round Rock. In August, with the Rangers in a playoff hunt and looking for potentially impactful bats off the bench, the club promoted Martinez on the same day it designated Bubba Thompson for assignment. He made a splash early on, reaching base safely in 10 of his first 22 plate appearances, then went one for his final 21 at-bats before heading back to the minors. His ability to draw a walk (16.0 BB%), make noise on the bases and occasional pop (14 HRs in 77 games) makes him intriguing -- especially since he cut down on strikeouts in 2023. Travis Jankowski and Robbie Grossman left for free agency, opening a role as a fourth (or fifth) outfielder for Martinez, but there's no cracking the starting core of Evan Carter, Leody Taveras and Adolis Garica, left to right, and top prospect Wyatt Langford is a more big-league ready bat than Martinez already. Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
When Martinez agreed to his contract with the Rangers, the prevailing belief was that he'd be assigned to either High-A or Double-A out of the chute after impressing as a teenager in the Cuban National Series. Martinez played about a week in the Dominican Summer League and then spent the rest of the season at Low-A ball. The numbers look good at a glance, with Martinez posting a 121 wRC+, eight homers and 11 stolen bases in 60 games, but they weren't all that impressive when considering age versus level. The fact that he struck out 25.3% of the time at Low-A as a 22-year-old raises real concerns about his ability to hit upper-level pitching. Martinez went on to fare well in the Arizona Fall League, though the caliber of the pitching in this year's AFL was pretty low. There's some upside here, but he has to make enough contact for the other tools to shine through, and we haven't seen enough yet to suggest the odds of him doing so are particularly good.

Bumped down depth chart?
Martinez may have been pushed further down Atlanta's outfield depth chart after the club signed Brian Anderson on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Anderson has primarily worked at third base during his big-league career but also has 229 appearances in the outfield. Martinez was called up last week after Ronald Acuna was lost for the season with a torn ACL, but he's appeared in just one game as a pinch runner. It appears Martinez will retain his place on the MLB roster for now, but he likely doesn't have much security.
