2026 Fantasy Outlook
Could this be the year the Rangers find a permanent home for Smith? He's operated as a super-utility player since arriving to the majors in 2022, but the trade of second baseman Marcus Semien opens a spot. Primarily a third baseman and shortstop, Smith has expanded his portfolio to include outfield, first base and second base (eight games). His value to the team spiked the last two years, when he appeared in 293 games with a .716 OPS, 23 steals and 23 home runs. He's also fallen off in the second half of those two seasons. It's fair to wonder if he's suited to an everyday role. Rangers general manager Chris Young referred to second base as an open competition and said Smith was the most established of the internal options that includes Ezequiel Duran, Cody Freeman, Sam Haggerty and Michael Helmen. Analysis
It's unclear when Smith was injured, as he played all nine innings of the Rangers' last game Sunday against the Tigers. He will be eligible for activation May 15, though the club did not reveal a timetable for Smith's return to action. Ezequiel Duran will serve as the Rangers' primary second baseman while Smith is shelved.

How does Josh Smith compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Between Josh Jung's wrist problems and Corey Seager getting nicked up, Smith finished third on the Rangers with nearly 600 plate appearances last season. He wound up winning the American League's Silver Slugger award at the utility spot, although the vast majority of Smith's production came in the first half when he collected an .861 OPS while slugging 10 of his 13 home runs. He had just a .565 OPS after the All-Star break, and Smith's .304 xwOBA versus his actual .323 wOBA suggests there was some good fortune involved. Smith should fill a super utility role again in 2025, although it's unlikely he'll play as much as he did in 2024. He'll be eligible at shortstop and third base out of the gate and could pick up additional eligibility, which is useful in deeper formats.
In 2023, Smith reprised the utility role he held the previous season, settling in at third base, shortstop and the never-quite-settled left field spot at various times. The infield positions are locked in by Corey Seager and Josh Jung, while left field now belongs to Evan Carter. Designated hitter is open, but Smith's competent minor-league bat has yet to translate over 485 plate appearances in the show (.191 average, .592 OPS). The lefty batter didn't indicate much against any pitch type (.191 against fastballs, .176 against curve/breaking balls) or as a potential platoon mate (.623 OPS against right-handers). There isn't a path to regular at-bats for Smith, whose value lies in position versatility.
The H in Josh H. Smith stands for hitter as this young man can hit. He owns a .305/.421/.500 triple-slash line in a minor league career with a slugging percentage built more on gap extra base hits than homers along with a 41 of 53 track record on the basepaths. He struggled in his rookie season when Texas called him up with non-fastballs as he hit a collective .096 against breaking balls and offspeed pitches with a healthy dose of swing and miss. The baptism by fire last season did allow him to gain third base and outfield eligibility on draft day, but he does not have enough bat to be a fantasy regular at either position much less for the improving Rangers offense. Smith can be targeted in later rounds of deep AL-Only leagues as well as draft and hold formats in case something does open up for him as he still has good overall tools.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Favorite at second base?
3BTexas Rangers
December 7, 2025
Smith could be the favorite to start at second base for the Rangers, since Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports that the club is expected to replace Marcus Semien at second base internally.
Analysis
The utility man saw action at all seven positions in the field last season, but he made just four appearances at second base since Semien was rarely out of the lineup. Smith is likely to move around the diamond again in 2026, but he could have a bit more of a primary position at the keystone if the Rangers don't make a significant infield addition this winter.
