Romero appeared to be the Cardinals' closer after the team traded Ryan Helsley at the 2025 deadline - he secured seven of the team's next 11 saves (64 percent) after the trade - but the southpaw ceded closing duties to Riley O'Brien to close out September. Romero is a solid high-leverage arm who generally performs well against left-handed batters (.180 BA since 2023), but he doesn't fit the typical closer profile. He struck out just 21.6 percent of the batters he faced in 2025, while issuing far too many free passes (29 across 61 innings).
