Foley missed most of the 2025 campaign following arthroscopic right shoulder surgery. The 30-year-old was subsequently non-tendered by the Tigers this offseason, but inked a one-year deal with the Giants a few weeks later. Foley's recovery will keep him out of action until midseason, but the right-hander will remain under team control through 2028. If he can return to pre-surgery form - he tossed his sinker in the upper 90's while inducing plenty of ground balls - he could quickly ascend San Francisco's high-leverage hierarchy. Foley (shoulder) earned a hold in Triple-A Sacramento's 6-5 loss to Round Rock on Wednesday, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning.

Foley underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery last May and was placed on the 60-day injured list Feb. 13. The right-hander began his rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose before moving to Sacramento after just one appearance. He entered Wednesday's game in the sixth inning and allowed a double but escaped without giving up a run, throwing 11 of his 14 pitches for strikes. The 30-year-old will likely require an extended ramp-up period and remains without a definitive timeline to return to the majors.

Foley's secondary offerings have been a work in progress, but he finally achieved success with his slider in 2024. The right-hander held opposing hitters to a mere .113 average and .145 slugging percentage that were among the best marks in the league for that pitch type. As expected, his usage of the slider increased by 14.1 percentage points - to 31.5 percent overall. Foley still favored his 97 mph sinker (54.7 percent usage), but it was crushed by opposing hitters (.299 AVG, 48.6 percent hard-hit). The 29-year-old still led Detroit with a career-high 28 saves and a 62.2% team save share, but he lost his grasp on closing duties for an extended period near mid-season and during the playoffs. Oddly, Foley only pitched once out of seven postseason contests, casting some doubt on his prospects for opening 2025 as the Tigers' closer. A shared role and more conservative save projection - perhaps 15-to-20 for Foley - might be a more realistic outcome.
