Retiring after season
Paxton (calf) said Wednesday that he plans to retire after the season, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Paxton is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a tear in his right calf and won't be able to pitch again during the regular season, though he could be able to return for the postseason if the Red Sox are able to secure a wild-card spot. Either way, 2024 will mark the 35-year-old's final season in professional baseball, putting an end to his 11-year career. He'll finish with a career 3.77 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside 1,005 strikeouts through 951 innings.

Paxton was limited to just six starts from 2020-22 due to mostly arm-related injuries, so the fact that he was able to take the ball 19 times in 2023 was a minor miracle. He had stretches where he was extremely effective, particularly during the first half when he managed a 2.73 ERA and 64:14 K:BB across 56 innings of work. Paxton stumbled to a 6.98 ERA after the All-Star break, though, and allowed 17 runs over his final three outings before being shut down in early September with a knee problem. Now 35, Paxton is among the poorest health bets in the game, but the left-hander still throws hard and has two effective secondary pitches in his curveball and cutter. He signed with the Dodgers on a one-year, $11 million deal in free agency, and that landing spot makes Paxton an attractive option to round out a fantasy pitching staff for as long as his body holds up.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return to Boston
According to Robert Murray of FanSided.com, the Red Sox are in discussions to acquire Paxton from the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
The 35-year-old lefty was designated for assignment by Los Angeles on Monday, and Boston is apparently interested in a reunion after he posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 101:33 K:BB over 96 innings for the Red Sox last year. Paxton had a 4.43 ERA with a similar workload for the Dodgers this season, but he had a 64:48 K:BB and has seen his fastball velocity drop two ticks to 93.2 mph. The Red Sox could use some help at the back end of their rotation, and Paxton would provide some veteran depth even if he's unable to return to his 2023 form.
