2026 Fantasy Outlook
Lopez's 2025 season truly came out of nowhere. Originally drafted by the Giants in the 26th round, he was flipped to the Rays in 2019 for Joe McCarthy. Lopez worked in the Rays system rather successfully at all three levels but struggled in spot starts in 2023 and 2024. Lopez was included with Jeffrey Springs in the trade to acquire Joe Boyle, and Lopez made the most of his new opportunity. He survived pitching in Las Vegas with three wins and a 2.67 ERA with 38 strikeouts and just two homers in 27 innings of work. That earned him the promotion to Sacramento, where he worked in 21 games and pitched to an AL-Only serviceable 4.08 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 113 strikeouts in 92.2 innings. The weird thing about Lopez was he was much more effective pitching at Sutter Field than he was on the road. He held the opposition to a .212/.297/.358 line with a 2.64 ERA and 1.13 WHIP at home but a .246/.335/.444 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the road. Which is more likely in 2026: regression at home or on the road? Either way, he is more useful in AL-Only leagues unless you want to use him as a mixed streamer and somehow figure out this weirdness in his splits. Read Past Outlooks
Still struggling to find plate
Lopez took a no-decision Wednesday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out five.
Analysis
The left-hander is making a habit of issuing free passes -- he's now walked at least three in each of his first four starts of 2026. Lopez has fanned at least five in three consecutive outings, but he's not yet given up fewer than two runs in any appearance thus far. His next start currently projects for next week in Seattle versus the division-rival Mariners, but Lopez owns a 6.38 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and an alarming 16:17 K:BB through 18.1 innings and will be tough to trust in fantasy lineups.

If you squint really hard, you can see some shades of Ryan Yarbrough in Lopez. Both pitchers are soft-tossing lefties with unique arm angles relying on extension and guile in their efforts to be successful against opposing batters. Lopez has been able to use that skill rather effectively as a minor-leaguer with a 30.6 percent strikeout rate, but has been more hittable as a swingman in two different stints with the Rays over a short 22.2 inning sample size. Lopez has value to a club in a swingman type role or as a bulk pitcher if the rotation is impacted by injuries. He's likely to begin the season in a relief role but should have a clearer path to a starting job after being traded to the Athletics.
