2026 Fantasy Outlook
Leiter was forced into the starting rotation out of spring training following injuries to both Jon Gray and Cody Bradford. While there were some rocky starts, the full body of work was good, with stretches of greatness along the way. Leiter went 10-10 with 3.86 ERA, 1.279 WHIP over 151.2 innings (29 starts). The right-hander struck out 148 (8.8 K/9) and walked 67 (4.4 BB/9). The walks jump out as sub-optimal, and that's been an issue for Leiter over his first few seasons as a professional. He's battled control issues and high walk totals at every stop, although the second half of 2025 hinted at the promise of a pitcher selected second overall in the 2021 draft. The 25-year-old posted a 3.28 ERA and dropped his walk rate to 3.66 BB/9 after the All-Star break. He's set to open the season as part of the Rangers' top three along with Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. Read Past Outlooks
Shines in final spring outing
Leiter allowed two hits and struck out six over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's exhibition start against the Royals.
Analysis
Leiter dazzled in his fifth and final spring start. Most impressive was his work putting away batters and his strike-throwing ability. The right-hander didn't walk a batter over his final 12.2 spring innings and enters the regular season having posted a 3.38 ERA and an 18:3 K:BB in exhibition contests. Leiter lines up to make his first regular-season start next Monday on the road against the Orioles.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
2022
Leiter had some incredible moments in 2024, including a start Aug. 15 for Triple-A Round Rock where he struck out 11 batters for all the outs in a 3.2-inning start, and when he tied a record for most whiffs (20) by a Rangers starter 25 or under against the Angels on Sept. 7, but he was consistently inconsistent. Leiter logged three or more walks in 12 of his 22 starts and had three minor-league starts where he failed to get out of the second inning and another at the big-league level. He gave up five or more runs in four of his nine MLB appearances. His upper-90s fastball is a menacing pitch (133 Stuff+) that lends itself to moments of brilliance, but his command is poor enough that he can get chased early against any opponent. Leiter's name value, draft pedigree (second overall pick in 2021) and pure stuff will keep the acquisition cost a little higher than the results warrant. There's clear bullpen risk, ratio risk and an unpredictable nature that can lead to a miserable fantasy experience, but there's also breakout potential if he can improve his command and overall mindset on the mound.

Introduces cutter
Leiter worked on adding a cutter to his arsenal during the offseason, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. "You're not looking for swing and misses with it, per se," he said. "It's more to just finish at-bats quicker, which is what I've been needing in order to be more efficient."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could work in relief
Rangers GM Chris Young indicated Leiter could be called up to work out of the bullpen in September to get him more big-league experience, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
Analysis
The 24-year-old received his first taste of the majors during the spring and allowed 17 earned runs over 9.1 frames in three starts. However, Leiter has enjoyed a solid campaign at Triple-A Round Rock and has a 3.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 101:34 K:BB across 71.1 innings, and another look in the big leagues down the stretch could be beneficial heading into 2025.
