Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
The opening and closing months of the 2025 season were as rough as they could get for Marquez while serving out of the Rockies' rotation. He lost six of his first seven starts of 2025 before ending the year with an 0-8 record over his last 11 starts, and he finished in the bottom three percentile in the league in stats such as xERA (5.81), xBA (.287), WOBA (.393) and strikeout rate (14.0 percent). Part of Marquez's late-season struggles may have been partially due to a right biceps tendon inflammation that caused him to land on the IL, but the soon-to-be 31-year-old has yet to catch on with a major-league squad for the 2026 season. Perhaps he gets an opportunity during spring training when injuries pop up, but it's difficult to envision seeing Marquez on a major-league roster without proving himself in the minors first. Piles up punchouts again Monday
Marquez hurled 4.2 innings in an exhibition start against Seattle on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
Analysis
Marquez actually worked as a reliever Monday, though he followed opener Kyle Hart after just one inning. Marquez logged a starter's workload with 81 pitches, and he racked up a whopping 22 whiffs -- 18 of which came on his knuckle curve. The veteran pitcher hasn't been a big strikeout guy in recent seasons, averaging less than a punchout per inning every year since 2019, but having Coors Field as your home park can have that kind of impact. Over his final two outings this spring, he's racked up 17 strikeouts across 9.2 frames. It remains to be seen if Marquez has rediscovered something in his arsenal or if he's just thriving in the atmosphere of exhibition games, but he seems to be headed for a role in San Diego's Opening Day rotation, and there's suddenly a reason to at least consider his name at the end of fantasy drafts in deep leagues.

Marquez is the latest reminder that all Tommy John surgery returns are not alike. Marquez made it back from his 2023 surgery and made just one appearance for the Rockies before a stress reaction in his repaired elbow shut him down for the rest of the season. Marquez signed a two-year deal before the 2024 season, so he has one more year to pitch for the only club he has ever pitched for at the major league level, which has spanned 1,020 innings of work dating back to 2016. Unfortunately, he has worked just 24 innings over the past two seasons, and right now, we do not yet know how his rehab from his latest setback is going. Marquez has mostly been a streaming start option in his career, but with this being his final year of his contract, it would be expected the Rockies will do the smart thing for once and deal someone in his final year once Marquez can prove he is once again healthy. Marquez has pitched to a 15 percent K-BB with a 3.83 ERA and 1.19 WHIP on the road for his career, and teams will be interested in his stuff as we get closer to the trade deadline assuming Marquez is back to full strength.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Landing spot in Sacramento?
The Athletics could be interested in signing Marquez this offseason, reports Jason Burke of SI.com.
Analysis
Former Rockies GM Bill Schmidt is now with the Athletics front office, so there is certainly some familiarity with Marquez. The right-hander had a 6.70 ERA and 83:48 K:BB in 26 starts for Colorado last season, and he made just five starts across the 2023 and 2024 campaign due to injuries. Marquez isn't likely to receive much in the form of contract guarantees, but he could be a good low-cost flier and should benefit from no longer having Coors Field as his home park.
