2026 Fantasy Outlook
The last we saw of Lauer, he had pitched his way over to the KBO after a terrible 2023 season with Milwaukee. When Milwaukee gives up on a pitcher, it is notable because of their work with their pitching lab and how they seemingly get the most out of every guy they acquire or draft. Lauer pitched in Triple-A for the Pirates and Astros in 2024 with little success, and ended the season pitching in the KBO where he won a World Series. Toronto signed the lefty to a minor league contact and called him up to the team at the end of April where in a swingman role he found some surprising success. Lauer regained some of the velocity his fastball lost in 2023, and while he threw nothing new, he better located what he threw and got whiff rates of 20 percent or higher on four of his five offerings while just missing with the other offering at 19 percent. The change-up has to improve for him to see a rotation again, as he allowed 12 of his 15 homers to righties but was otherwise split neutral despite the underperforming offspeed pitch. Lauer should resume a similar role with Toronto in 2026, which limits his usage to deeper AL-Only leagues. Read Past Outlooks
Notches another quality start
Lauer completed six innings against Colorado on Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters in a no-decision.
Analysis
Lauer got his first two outs via strikeout but then managed just one more punchout over the remainder of his outing. Regardless, he kept the Dodgers afloat while tossing 99 pitches (69 strikes) over six frames. Lauer looked like he'd notch a win until Tanner Scott blew a save opportunity by giving up three runs in the ninth. Still, Lauer regarded his fourth consecutive quality start and fifth over seven outings since making his Dodgers debut May 26. The veteran lefty has been far from dominant -- he has a 21:11 K:BB over 40.1 innings with Los Angeles -- but he's compiled a strong 3.12 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with the club after recording an ugly 6.69 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across eight appearances with Toronto earlier in the season. Lauer has pitched well enough to hold down a rotation spot, though he'll be hard-pressed to keep that role when Blake Snell (elbow) and Tyler Glasnow (back) come off the injured list, which is expected to happen at some point after the All-Star break.

After a few promising seasons between San Diego and Milwaukee, Lauer took a massive step backward in 2023, leading to his departure from the Brewers organization. The left-hander's stuff was down several ticks across the board and he missed time due to a shoulder injury. He was optioned upon activation from the injured list in June and spent time on the Triple-A inactive list due to an undisclosed health issue. Lauer returned to make just one final start on the final weekend of the regular season before being outrighted and opting for free agency in October. While it seemed likely that he was overperforming with sub-3.70 ERAs in 2021 and 2022, the swiftness of his decline was rather surprising. The 28-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates in March and will likely compete for a rotation spot over what remains of big-league camp.
