2026 Fantasy Outlook
Early was one of the top lefty starters in the minors at the time of his Sept. 9 promotion to the majors, but he exceeded expectations across four big-league starts and earned a start in the playoffs. He tallied a 2.60 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 22.2 K-BB% and 50.0 GB% in 100.1 innings across Double-A and Triple-A and a 2.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 31.6 K-BB% in four big-league starts. A 23-year-old whose 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame is still projectable, Early has a bevy of quality offerings, with his sweeper serving as a devastating put-away pitch against lefties while his curveball and changeup are used to dispatch righties. Additionally, he relies on his 93-mph sinker against lefties and his 94-mph four-seamer against righties, showcasing a versatile repertoire that few seasoned big-league starters can match. Early has never logged a walk rate over 9.8 percent and he is good at suppressing hard contact. He also doesn't have a notable injury history, as he didn't add low-to-mid-90s fastball velocity until after he got into pro ball in 2023. Early may have been underrated in the minor leagues, but he generated a substantial amount of buzz in his first taste of the big leagues and should open 2026 in Boston's rotation. Read Past Outlooks
Ineffective in fifth loss
Early (5-5) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on 11 hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Rangers. He struck out three.
Analysis
After allowing a leadoff long ball to Wyatt Langford, Early struggled to settle in, surrendering a three-run homer to Kyle Higashioka in the second inning and a two-run double to Brandon Nimmo in the fourth frame. He's allowed five home runs over the last three starts and 14 overall across 75.2 innings. It marked a season-worst outing for the southpaw in both hits and runs allowed, as his previous highs were six hits and five runs. Owning a 3.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 72:29 K:BB across 75.2 innings (14 starts), Early will look to get back on track next time out, tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Mariners.

Extension talks not happening
The Red Sox and Early aren't discussing a contract extension for the time being, according to Christopher Smith and Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
Analysis
The Red Sox haven't engaged in talks with Early's representatives about a long-term deal. Part of that could be due to Early's representation, as Excel Sports Management clients rarely pursue early long-term deals, but also because the left-hander has only 20 official days of service in his big-league career. Early looked good in his first taste of big-league action in 2025, though, posting a 2.33 ERA in 19.1 regular-season innings.
