2026 Fantasy Outlook
In his first year with the Cubs, Rea filled a back-of-the-rotation role and posted solid if not spectacular numbers. The veteran righty logged 159.1 innings across 32 appearances (27 starts) while compiling a 3.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 127 strikeouts. Rea also recorded 11 wins, which was one away from the career high he set a year earlier in Milwaukee. The ERA represented a new career best for Rea and it was the first time he ever posted a sub-4.00 figure across seven MLB seasons. The 35-year-old will never be confused for a staff ace, and with a career 7.32 K/9 and 4.46 FIP, his upside moving forward is limited. However, Rea is back with the Cubs in 2026 on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, and he figures to slot in as the team's No. 5 starter, at least until Justin Steele (elbow) is able to return, which could push the former into more of a swing role. Rea looked comfortable in Chicago last year, so he could provide some fantasy value as a streamer in the right matchups. Read Past Outlooks
Likely slated for bullpen role
Rea will likely work in a bullpen role to begin the season, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Chicago's key offseason pitching addition was Edward Cabrera, and he will likely slot in near the top of the rotation. The Cubs will also start the year with Cade Horton, who made a splash in the majors after he debuted last May. Justin Steele (elbow) should return at some point as well. The deeper pitching staff figures to push Rea into more of a swing role, at least early in the season. The veteran righty appeared in 32 games for Chicago last year, making 27 starts, and posted a 3.95 ERA and 127 strikeouts across 159.1 innings. Rea is a serviceable starter when given the opportunity, but his fantasy value takes a hit in long relief.

2016
Rea was a major rotation piece for the Brewers over the past two seasons, but the organization elected to turn down his $5.5 million club option for 2025 after he posted a 4.29 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 135:43 K:BB over 167.2 innings. He served up 52 home runs in 58 outings across the last two years and also had a 4.82 FIP during that span. Rea cleared waivers prior to Milwaukee turning down the option, so there's limited interest league-wide even at a modest salary. The 34-year-old may not get consistent starts again in 2025, but he should be able to secure a contract this winter, even if it's a minor-league pact.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
League unimpressed by arsenal
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Rea likely went unclaimed on waivers due to his Stuff+ of 84, which ranked 55th of 58 qualified starters during the 2024 regular season.
Analysis
The right-hander delivered results just below league average the past two seasons for the Brewers with a 4.40 ERA across 292.1 innings, and the organization declined his $5 million club option for 2025 after he passed through waivers. Rea was Milwaukee's most reliable starter at times in 2024 but faded down the stretch, and his non-dominant arsenal leads to a limited ceiling.
