Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
The former catching prospect is likely done in the majorls as he will turn 40 two weeks into the regular season and is coming off a season where he looked like he was playing as a 50-year old DH. Santana retains his outstanding understanding of the strike zone, and is only a year removed from a gold glove at first base, but his bat aged over the course of the 2025 season. It was one thing when we saw Santana struggle like this in Kansas City in 2021, but when 39-year old players have bad seasons, we just don't see rebounds. Santana was able to land with the Diamondbacks this winter and appears poised to fill the small side of a platoon at first base. Read Past Outlooks
Shelved by adductor strain
The Diamondbacks placed Santana on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right adductor strain.
Analysis
Santana suffered the injury in Sunday's game versus Atlanta and will need at least the next week-and-a-half to recuperate. With Pavin Smith (elbow) also shelved, the Diamondbacks' first-base and designated-hitter depth has thinned out. Ildemaro Vargas is at first base and Adrian Del Castillo is at DH on Tuesday against the Mets.

How does Carlos Santana compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

The veteran first baseman split the 2023 campaign between Milwaukee and Pittsburgh and had a .747 OPS with 23 home runs, 86 RBI and 78 runs in 146 games as he revitalized his career, and he put up similar numbers for Minnesota in 2024 with 23 long balls, 71 RBI, 63 runs and a .238/.328/.420 slash line in 150 contests. It's Santana's second straight season with an OPS over .700, and he's hit at least 18 homers in each of the past 13 full-length seasons and has a double-digit walk rate in every year of his career. There's a growing risk of decline since Santana will turn 39 years old in April, but for the most part he's been a reliable lower-tier first baseman in fantasy. However, his .240 batting average in 2023 was his highest since 2019, and he could be a drag in that category since often derives a lot of real-world offensive value from his keen eye and on-base percentage. Santana is back in Cleveland on a one-year deal for 2025, and pitcher-friendly Progressive Field could slightly depress his upside.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Draws interest from Arizona
The Diamondbacks are interested in signing Santana, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports reports.
Analysis
The Diamondbacks currently have the lefty-hitting Pavin Smith penciled in at first base, but general manager Mike Hazen would like to find a "complementary first baseman," per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Santana, a switch hitter, checks the box as a complementary piece but could also take over the strong side of a platoon. The 40-year-old experienced a drop off in 2025, posting a .633 OPS with 11 home runs and 54 RBI over 124 games between the Guardians and the Cubs. Smith's strikeout rate spiked to 32.1 percent in 2025, and his .258 average was propped up by a favorable .377 BABIP. Arizona may not want to count on him as the primary option at first base.
