Bryce Rainer

20-Year-Old ShortstopSS
Detroit Tigers A
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Rainer's dynasty stock was trending steadily up in his first pro season until he dislocated his shoulder in early June. The injury required surgery, but he is expected to be ready for spring training. Rainer got compared to Konnor Griffin a lot entering the 2024 draft, as they were the consensus top two prep shortstops. It's not a comparison anymore, but that's due to Griffin's meteoric rise rather than Rainer's shortcomings. Rainer slashed .288/.383/.448 with five home runs, nine steals, a 13.4 percent walk rate, a 22.1 percent strikeout rate and strong Statcast data (107.9 mph 90th percentile EV, 111.6 mph maxEV, 52.8 HardHit%) in 35 games before his injury. His arm is a big weapon at shortstop, and he projects to be Detroit's long-term answer at that position. Rainer has a little work to do against breaking balls, but he has a chance to be an above-average hitter with plus power and above-average speed. His power may take some time to fully return following the surgery, but he is talented enough to finish 2026 as a top 10 fantasy prospect. Read Past Outlooks

Fully cleared for hitting

Rainer (shoulder) served as a designated hitter Monday during a minor-league game on the back fields of Tigers camp, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
The 20-year-old shortstop hasn't yet been cleared to play defense after undergoing surgery in June to repair a dislocated right shoulder, but since he's hitting without restrictions this spring, he could be ready to make regular starts at DH once the minor-league season gets underway later this month. Before suffering the shoulder injury last summer, Rainer had been in the midst of a stellar first season in the professional ranks, as he slashed .294/.383/.452 with five home runs, nine stolen bases and a 13.1 percent walk rate over 149 plate appearances with Single-A Lakeland.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Once seen by some as a better prospect on the mound, Rainer showed up to his senior season for Harvard-Westlake with more strength and athleticism en route to solidifying his standing as one of the best prep position players in the 2024 class. He landed with the Tigers at No. 11 overall but did not play in official games after signing. The 6-foot-3 lefty-hitting shortstop showcased plus all-fields power potential and borderline plus speed as an amateur. He should stick at shortstop for the foreseeable future, but if he does need to move to third base, his plus arm would allow him to handle the hot corner with ease. Scouts praise Rainer's hitting ability, and while he is generally considered to be power-over-hit, the expectation is that he'll hit for plus power with a decent average.
