2025 Fantasy Outlook
Doyle ruled in 2024 as he evolved his defensive-first 2023 approach to a more balanced approach in 2024, becoming one of the biggest fantasy surprises considering he was overlooked in many drafts last winter. Doyle's improvement had a direct correlation to his reduction in contact rate, as he improved his strikeout rate by nearly 10 full percentage points while reducing his swinging strike rate nearly four full percentage points. Doyle was arguably the most improbable of the 19 players who finished with at least 20 homers and 20 steals in 2024 because of how badly he looked in 2023 offensively. The ace he always has up his sleeve is his defense in center field, which is unmatched on the Colorado roster, and those abilities are necessary in the spacious outfield at home. Doyle, like most Colorado hitters, hit much better at home (.313) than on the road (.211), but that was the exact opposite of what happened in his rookie season when he hit .168 at home and .236 on the road. Home/road splits are always a volatile measure, but Doyle's defense is as constant as they come. The challenge for Doyle in 2025 is to avoid the script Nolan Jones played from 2023 to 2024. ANALYSIS
Doyle was anointed Colorado's leadoff hitter this offseason after the retirement of Charlie Blackmon, and he's occupied that position in all 11 games this spring. He's hit well, but there are a few noteworthy portions of his line, including the fact that he's taken zero walks and attempted only one stolen base. Doyle will presumably pick up his stolen base pace during the regular season, as he swiped 30 bags in 2024 with a success rate of 85.7 percent.

Stat Review
How does Brenton Doyle compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.

  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
The season slash line reads ugly at .203/.250/.343, but Doyle did some exciting things in spurts over the course of his rookie 2023 campaign, or at least enough to hint at future fantasy relevance. He stole 22 bases in 27 attempts while ranking in the 99th percentile among all major leaguers in sprint speed and he reached the double digits in home runs (10) on the second-to-last day of the regular season. Doyle also showed tremendous range in the outfield and a strong throwing arm, which are important elements in ensuring that he can maintain a starting role as his offensive development lags behind his already-elite defense. The 25-year-old is still too raw for draft-day consideration in standard mixed leagues, but it's easy to envision him becoming a popular waiver-wire pickup as 2024 rolls along.
Doyle was taken in the fourth round of the 2019 Draft out of Division II Shepherd University and has shown from the beginning an intriguing fantasy skill set with his ability to hit for power and steal bases. The 24-year-old put together a 20-20 season in 2022 between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque, popping 26 home runs and stealing 23 bases (while being caught just three times). The bad news is Doyle has also posted some prodigious strikeout totals, most recently fanning at a 31.2 percent rate last season (and walking at just a 5.1 percent rate). You can dream on Doyle's power/speed potential at Coors Field, and he's just a step away now after being added to the 40-man roster over the winter. The question will be whether Doyle can make enough contact for that to matter, and we don't have to look far for a cautionary tale with a similar skill set in Sam Hilliard.
Doyle is a Rockies prospect with plus raw power and plus speed, which should get the attention of dynasty managers right away. That said, he turns 23 in May and has never played official games above rookie ball, so his hit tool is very much to be determined. He put up comical numbers (185 wRC+) in the hitter-friendly Pioneer League, but that's basically par for the course for a player his age with his tools. Obviously slashing .383/.477/.611 is never a bad thing, and considering Colorado selected him in the fourth round in 2019 from a Division II school, this was proof that he was a prospect of note. He continued to make strides as one of the older prospects in the fall instructional league, setting up a highly-anticipated full-season debut. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound outfielder can handle all three outfield spots, and hopefully the Rockies have embraced an actual rebuild by the time he is big-league ready.
Doyle received $500,000 after the Rockies selected him in the fourth round out of Division II Shepherd University. He proceeded to lead the hitter-friendly Pioneer League in AVG (.383), OPS (1.088) and wRC+ (185). Doyle had a 47.0 Pull% and a 50.0 GB%, so while he is an above-average runner, his .484 BABIP is not supported at all by his batted-ball data. At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, his plus raw power is very real, but his speed may tick down in his mid-20s. He can handle all three outfield spots and did not show platoon splits in his first taste of pro ball. His 21.9 K% is higher than we would like from a 21-year-old hitter in rookie ball, but not glaringly high, while his 14.4 BB% was excellent. There are no obvious flaws with Doyle at this point, and we probably won't know how well the hit tool really is until he gets past the hitter's havens in Asheville and Lancaster and arrives at Double-A.

Looking to become team leader
OFColorado Rockies
January 26, 2025
Doyle is planning to take on more of a leadership role with the Rockies in 2025 following the retirement of Charlie Blackmon, reports Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com.
ANALYSIS
Blackmon spent the entirety of his 14-year MLB career in Colorado, so it'll be big shoes to fill in the clubhouse. Doyle took a major step forward during his second season in 2024 with 23 home runs, 30 stolen bases and a .763 OPS.
