Closer Watch

Athletics - Grant Balfour threw a scoreless ninth inning on Monday night against the Pirates to earn his 23rd save, and his 41st straight conversion dating back to last season. The 41 saves are a club record, besting Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley's run of 40 spanning the 1991 and 1992 seasons, the latter in which he took home American League Cy Young honors. While Balfour won't be in the conversation for that award in 2013, he continues to be a great closer option in any league.

Rockies - Rafael Betancourt allowed two base runners but held the Padres scoreless in the ninth inning Monday to pick up his first save since returning from the disabled list. So far there don't seem to be any residual effects from the groin injury that kept Betancourt out for nearly a month, allowing him to maintain the closer's role for now despite the looming presence of Rex Brothers as the team's closer of the future. As he was last season, Betancourt should be steady in the role going forward, but the Rockies' recent slide have made save chances hard to come by of late.

Recommended Pickup

Wade Miley, SP, ARI - After a season in which he narrowly lost out on National League Rookie of the Year honors to Bryce Harper, it would seem inconceivable that Miley would be hanging out on the waiver wire at any point this season, but that's exactly where he found himself in many leagues after posting a 3-5 record and 5.01 ERA heading into June. With growing talk that he could soon lose his rotation spot with reinforcements returning from the DL or with promising youngsters Tyler Skaggs, Randall Delgado and Archie Bradley angling for a promotion, Miley has sparkled in his seven starts since June 5. He's turned in five quality starts during that time and has been particularly lights-out of late, giving up just one run over 13.2 innings in July. While his strikeout rate remains unremarkable just like last season, Miley seems to have at least rediscovered some semblance of the form that made him a useful fantasy asset. His next start should be a winnable one Thursday against a scuffling Brewers squad.
