Closer Watch

Arizona -- After he was bypassed for Sunday's save opportunity due to a tired arm, Addison Reed entered the ninth inning Tuesday against the Astros, throwing a perfect frame and striking out two batters to notch his 16th save of the season. Reed's strong outing would seem to indicate he's feeling healthy, but his struggles with the long ball (eight homers allowed over 29.1 innings) have proven costly this season, and may not make him long for the closer's role. For what it's worth, Gibson indicated Monday that Reed was still the team's unquestioned ninth-inning man, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to stash Brad Ziegler in deeper leagues if Gibson should opt for a change.

Recommended Pickup

Eugenio Suarez, SS, DET -- The Tigers were criticized in the offseason for choosing not to pursue an upgrade at shortstop after Jose Iglesias was ruled out for the season, and the results have been predictably brutal for the most part, with neither Alex Gonzalez nor Andrew Romine offering much production from the spot. While the sample size is still small, the recently-recalled Suarez might have halted the trend. Entering play Tuesday, Suarez had assumed three consecutive starts at shortstop, going 4-for-10 at the dish with two homers and four RBI. Suarez's minor-league profile would suggest that the power won't be maintained, but he's shown the ability to both hit for average, draw walks and steal the occasional base in the minors. He's not an elite contributor in any one category, but with the middle infield pickings rather slim in deeper formats, Suarez could have some sneaky value. At the very least, he'll continue to serve as the starting shortstop until further notice, putting him in position to reap the benefits of being a member of one of the league's better lineups.
