Closer Watch

Diamondbacks – After J.J. Putz allowed three runners to reach base and gave up an earned run to blow the save (his fifth of the season) in his return from the DL on Monday, manager Kirk Gibson said Heath Bell would re-assume closing duties for the time being. Gibson was apparently not pleased with Putz's mechanics, and he will use him in low-leverage middle relief situations until he is able to iron some things out. Bell racked up 14 saves in Putz's absence, but he was hardly reliable in June, so Putz stands a decent chance to get his job back at some point.

Recommended Pickup

Bud Norris, SP, HOU – Though he's noticed a steep decline in strikeout rate this season (6.26 K/9) compared to 2012 (8.82 K/9), Norris has compensated by keeping runs off the board, producing a 3.35 ERA on the season, fueled by a 2.77 mark in six June starts. The ERA seems more or less sustainable, as his BABIP and strand rate have actually increased. Norris has instead compensated by generating more groundballs while cutting down his walk rate, exchanging making batters whiff for improved control. Of course, the constraints of playing for the Astros have hurt him with just five wins on the season, he's a prime candidate to get traded to a contender before the deadline, which would only boost his growing value going forward. At the moment, Norris is owned in just 6.1 percent of ESPN leagues, 16 percent of Yahoo! leagues, and 47 percent of CBS leagues.
