Closer Watch

Angels – Ernesto Frieri returned in full force Monday, striking out two in a perfect ninth to finish off the Yankees for his third save. Despite Joe Smith's effectiveness since replacing him as closer, Frieri may have now taken the job back with a string of five consecutive near-perfect appearances – the only blemish a hit batsman in Saturday's game. That said, Smith was out sick Monday, so it remains to be seen how this situation will shake out.

Royals – The typically unimpeachable Greg Holland picked up a blown save Monday, giving up a solo homer to the Padres' Jedd Gyorko in the ninth inning. Should be nothing to worry about here.

Indians – John Axford gave up a 10th-inning homer to notably punchless shortstop Eduardo Escobar on Monday, breaking a scoreless tie and sending the Indians to a 1-0 loss. Axford's now 0-3 after taking losses each of the last two games, surrendering four runs on three hits (two homers) and three walks over 1.1 innings between Sunday and Monday. His WHIP has now pushed its way up to a horrendous 1.54; meanwhile, Cody Allen has a 2.03 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, not to mention his very fine K:BB. Make sure Allen's owned in your leagues.

Blue Jays – It was Brett Cecil who got the call in Monday's ninth inning, and he tossed a perfect frame for his second save. Aaron Loup struck out three in a scoreless seventh and Steve Delabar pitched a scoreless eighth; both those guys remain in the mix for save chances as well until Casey Janssen is ready to return.

Recommended Pickup
Danny Duffy, SP, KC – After a terrifically strong start to the season in a relief role, Duffy got the call to replace the injured/horrible Bruce Chen in the rotation Saturday. While he only lasted four innings and uncharacteristically walked four batters, Duffy's just getting stretched out. His pedigree in the minors (2.88 career ERA, 10.5 K/9) is remarkable, but the start of his career has been slowed by injuries. Now that he's finally healthy, a breakout could be coming. Duffy's second start comes this week in Seattle – a terrific place to pitch, and a good place for Duffy to start building his rest-of-season rotation candidacy. Snatch him up.
